moving battery to the trunk

Hey guys, I do a lot of work on my engine and I was thinking it would be easier if I just moved the battery to the trunk, maybe try to get it down by the spare tire. I know people do this to make rooms for turbos, but I just want the extra open space to make simple repairs easier. This extra weight in the trunk might also help with traction in the winter.

Anyways my question is, can I just run some 4gauge wires from the battery connectors to the trunk? Is it that simple-I'm assuming so. Thanks

I've been thinking the same thing, as I already have an 8 gauge wire going to the trunk for my (sometimes) installed amp.

Is this that all has to be done for battery replacement? All experts that could chime in would be appreciated

Your motives to move the battery to the trunk are weak. How often are you doing repairs to justify this? Why not just remove the battery when working on your car, it takes a whole 2 minutes.........

But if you must, use 0 gauge or 4 gauge.

I would try to put it in jack compartment if I were doing it. But I guess some people have kept there stock jacks there and all that hardware that goes around it. I just keep a bottle jack in my trunk now, best $12 I have ever spent .

thanks for the link. I might try this out. However I dont think buying a 100 dollar kit is necessary.

I also like the look of a cleaner engine bay. Its just something that floats my boat and i know many will think its pointless.

if i were to do this, i would definately invest in one of the high end compact dry cell batteries.

I ran O guage from the fuse box in my galant to the batery in the trunk so I think your headed in the right direction!!! I grounded the batery in the trunk and also grounded the original negative batery wire.. You seem to have the right idea on what your doing You caould also pick up a stock batery tray and lock from a junked car for like 50 cents. Good luck glad you liked the sarcasm

Turbo write-ups would be a good place to start.

Run 0 gauge just to be sure and tell the rest of these naysayers to take a long jump off a short pier! :stfu:

make sure you use at least 1G to 2/0 due to the long length of wire you'll be adding, it will create a lot of resistance. And as said make sure you get a sealed/maintenence free battery. Post up some pics if you do it I wouldnt mind seeing. Ill be installing a secondary bat for my stereo shortly so let me know where you end up putting that thing. good luck

everyone is on the right track, all our race desert trucks, the batteries are on the back for weight...we use normally a redtop/or a yellowtop optima..
do to the lack of leakable acid.
thats your choice..
depending on your plans for the car should make the decision of what u will or should run for wire gauges.. anything from 0-4...
i would run a 2 if i was you..to be safe.

hey, I moved my battery to the back about year ago (I have hood pins and people were trying to steal in on a couple of occasions - thank god for the hood alarm). I ran a 2gauge wire back there with a cut-off switch mounted down by the ash tray. I grounded the battery in the trunk and kept the original grounds in the engine bay attached to the block.... but still having some power issues. Have moved yours yet black_maxed95? I'm curious if other battery-movers are having similar problems or solutions.

Just make sure you have good grounds, redo them/ sand them down if necessary. All my problems from relocation was from a weak ground.

think about having an older audi, they all mount the battery under the back seat so you have to pull the rear seat bottom off everytime you want to jump it, my friend had a winter beater that would drain the battery overnight so he ended up driving around with no back seat all the time lol.

I would like to see some pics of where you decide to put the battery and how you mount it. I totally agree with you, any space you can free up for working is worth it. plus if you wanted to you could probably use that space to rig up a sick heat shield for you intake n such, keep us updated!

well considering youve got your voltage stabalizer and grounding kit id say move it to the trunk with some good quality 0 gauge. make ya a bracket in the spare tire well if you dont use your spare and put the stabalizer and battery in there and be sure to ground it really well back there. then take your groundwire kit and just shorten them to the point to point styles instead of your octopus style lol. damn i wish i could help ya too. so when i do it ill know exactly what im up against... gl man

eh with my crazy grounding kit and new stabalizer on my battery now im not sure if this project is still gonna happen. it was just an idea i had a few weeks ago. idk i might do it still, if i do it would be over winter break when i have time. right now school and work take up way too much time to do anything major (something consisting of more than 2-3 hours)
