I just found good deal for 1996 year SE white faced cauges instrument cluster. The question is can I swap it into my car (i have ugly those GLE cluster)? I want to set correct miles to reflect it on my car actual miles, and if it is possible how to do it? So my computer will not show milleage fraud as I have heard that our Maxima computer records mileage or its b.s.?

Any other info I should know?

Yes, it is possible to swap. It's easy to take out the cluster. You can take the cluster to the dealer and they should be able to change the milage for you.

 

so its legal to swap cluster? i am on a budget and cannt afford to pay dealer like $400 to do this job. maybe an independent shop can do it for me for much lower costs? all what i want is that this new cool SE cluster to have exact same milleage as my current cluster.

one more question, maybe i can set correct miles ont his cluster by myself and install it on my car? i have a link to another website which shows how to remove cluster and install it. but no info on setting miles?

 

Sure it's legal. The only thing you have to worry about is the milage. Go to a junkyard and find a wrecked SE and swap the cluster. I wanted to swap my cluster as well and my local junkyards quoted me $200 for the cluster alone.

Good luck finding a car with the exact same milage.

You could find a shady shop that does milage rollbacks and ask them to rollfoward.

So far, I haven't found anything anywhere that tells you how to change the milage yourself. Cause not-so-honest people might use those powers for evil instead of good.

 

exactly! i have found cluster from SE 1996 with like 115k miles for $45-55, but my car is 1997 gle with only 43miles, so if i knew how its done to set miles correctly to reflect my car miles i would buy this cluster right away.

also another concern for me is that true that our maxima computer records our miles or not? bec if i decide to sell my car later i do not want anyone accusiong me of milleage fraud. all must be honest way with accurate miles.

 

All you need is the face plate AKA the black part with the numbers in your car and the white part in the SE. That's ALL you need to change.

 

Yeah, but it's a b!tch taking those faces off. I did it twice. Once when I was putting on my indiglos. And then again about a week later when I was took my indiglos off.

I never wanna do that again. Let's just say that I don't have the hands to be a surgeon.

Uhh... perhaps you've never taken out the cluster or the face plates. It's definately easier just to take out the cluster.

And he found a same year car. Like medicsonic said, the clusters are the same. Only the face plates are different.

according to both sources our maxima made pre 1998 computer does not record miles. so basically replacing gle/gxe cluster to SE is acceptable as long i set my own correct milleage. its done by performing mechanical and know how operation and I will not disclose it due to high rate of fraud.

Yes it is. But you have to take off your needles. That's the hardest part.

 

what about Indiglo's? they don't come with needles.. do they? That sucks too.. I think i rather have the SE whiteface gauges then the Indiglos

 

Indiglos? Nope, they don't come with needles. You could get the indiglo needles though. But the 97+ (or is it 98+?) have those non-opaque needles.

Cheston has instructions on how to take your needles off on his site.

 

Exactly I prefer original SE cauges over those stupid indiglos which are too much hassle to install and have inferious quality.
