No, I wouldn't recommend pressure washing your engine bay, I wouldn't even recommend hose washing it. I recommend time and patience with some cloth's and good degreaser/cleaner.

Personally I was lazy and took the risk and come out alive, you might be just as lucky. It's up to you.

 

Well thanks for the compliments but to compare a Maxima to other cars, especially Hondas isnt fair.
The Maxima has its cold air filter enclosed with splash shields. The only opening to the filter is through the foglight opening. Also, our cars arent that low, compared to how low Hondas go at least. Ive known Honda guys to get hydrolocked as well but they were slammed on coilovers which made the car basicly hug the ground and the filter for there intake was exposed to open air right above the ground.
For as long as I have been a member Ive only seen one Maxima owner get hydrolocked. He had his filter sitting right at the foglight hole exposing it to everything and he was boosted so when he did hit the puddle he had plenty of pressure to suck it in.
My point was that if a CAI only yeilds 1-3HP (if that) and the Bypass valve takes away 1-3HP, why even use the CAI?

 

I hose my down every so often and a lot of other members do to. The trick is to not spray any thing electrical under high pressure, also let the engine dry before starting it up.

 

Man just scrub and scrub you cant go wrong. buy some degreaser and get some brushes and rags.

 

Ok, your talking me into it,I'll wipe it down, but the popular degeaser I bought from AutoZone says not to use on aluminum of any type, having a 97 , most of the top is aluminum. Also do you need to rinse this degreaser off with damp rag also? What type should I buy? thanks.

 

ya i didnt think pressure washing was a good idea either but i thought id ask and if lots of people do it and get away with it i might try it. but im well aware of the electrical damage possibilities

Blah,i wash my engine with pressurized water all the time with no problems...but i also use a little secret weapon to clear out any left over water..

Just the opposite actually.

 

I used a pressure washer on one of my other cars, non-max, and needless to say it wouldn't run. Water and electrical parts do not mix. And the last time I checked under the hood of my Max, every other part is electrical in some way. So just be careful where and what you spray.
When I clean under the hood I use a toilet bowl brush and a bucket of warm soapy water for most of the body panels under the hood, engine parts that were greasy got a spritze of degreaser and a little elbow grease and a follow up with the warm soapy water.

I also find it amusing that a thread titled "Post Pics of your CAI" has 52 posts and only 2 pictures of actual CAI's

That's not a shield, if you noticed, that engine bay is using forced induction by means of a supercharger kit, and in place of an intercooler (I assume) its a aftermarket thingy with water and/or alcohol injection thing that allows an alternative method for cooling the boosted air before entering the throttle body. I might be off in this answer, so be sure to ask around the advanced performance forum

Do you have to remove your bumper every time to get to your filter? Or can you do it through the wheel well? Because I was thinking about going the under-the-battery route, but I don't want to if I'll have to remove the battery to clean the filter..

Also, is that an eBay kit?

 

You can get to it through the splash gaurd in the fenderwell.

I was swapping my front end and took this picture for clarity in case people didn't understand where a filter sits with a CAI. Like flava said, you can go up through the splash guard. And it's actually an authentic Place Racing CAI, with a MonsterFlow Cone type filter.

 

Gotcha. I meant to say not wanting to remove the bumper every time, not the battery. Thanks for the info.. I'll definitely be going that route.

how does that work out for you?

i know for guys w/ 5spd trannies, there is a lot of space in front of the tranny.

you could easily run something in front of the tranny right up to the under body plastic. i actually removed some of the under body plastic.
i thought it'd be a good idea but not sure if i've seen any pics of anyone really doing that.
