The bar that controls the front and back movement for gear selection decided to break on me at the track last night. Its not all the way broken yet, but the weld is breaking between the bar itself and the plate that the shifter assembly is bolted to. I'm so pissed... I dont know where I could get something like that other than a dealership. I might end up making something stronger for it...

 

Im curious to why these issues are cropping up more lately. Perhaps it is the extra force required because of the short throw shifter?

Where you using the clutch to shift?

Sure it's not the shifter bushing? $25 part. No reason to rip things out.

Haha shifter bushing 25$. If you can get one from nissan. they've been on back order for awhile, i tried getting one from my work like 1 month ago and still havent heard anything and they tried to VOR it to get it sooner. I guess fast shipping doenst help if theres no parts to be shipped.

 

Damn that's crazy.

Disconnect both from trans, remove center console & four bolts from underneath (have fun with the rear two ) And take the shifter assembly out as a whole from inside the car, it's much easier that way, don't even need to drop exhaust, just heat shield, than weld the crap out of them, maybe toss a few gussetts in there?

 

Its cracked at the weld just to the left of the bolt. I put it there to support it since its the up and down movement that is causing it to crack.



Anyone have the shifter trim so I dont have to look at that all the time?? lol

 

Shifter trim adds weight mate! LOL if your trackin the car, loose all the weight you can. Also ... you could check the Classifieds Forums (or PM Fanatickrockford).

This has happened to me twice now.... and is the reason for my burnt clutch thread a few days ago... I have a B&M short throw along with a polyurethane bushing.. but to be honest, im not sure where this stress is coming from?? I guess I have shifted hard from time to time in the past but I couldnt believe it was hard enough to break a weld. Maybe the polyurethane bushing could have helped contribute to it as there is much less give than there use to be with the rubber bushing. Either way, this sucks. I was driving 2 weeks ago when this happened and the shifter dropped an inch or two and I had to pull it up and try slamming it in every which direction to find a gear in the middle of traffic. Of course I found 4th which caused me to do 5k rpm clutch dumps at the last 5 stoplights before I got home completely burning out my clutch... All that to say, I feel your pain... Weld the crap out of it.

 

See where the weld is it acts like a lever. When you push foreward on the shifter, mainly in third, its pushing down on the weld. There is no support to keep the bar up so it acts like a lever pushing the bar down as the plate piece wants to angle down. With the bolt there it supports the bar making it impossible for the lever action to happen therefore strengthening the shifting process many times over. I can shift as hard as I want now, even with that weld mostly broken, because there is no up and down movement.

 

^^^ This is a great a great idea.. wish I had thought of it the first time mine broke. Im definitely going to have to try this..
