Im driving home from work this morning. I learned yesterday that my ball joint is bad. So today it falls out, then as i make a cautious and steady turn to the right, my driver tire goes flying out from the wheel well down Grand Ave. Thankfully it didnt hit anyone. but now i think i need new parts. From obsevation....

-Disc
-Caliper
-Ball Joint
-Lug Nuts
-Hub
-Fender (hopefully I can find on painted Pebble Beige on here)

Total: $300

Labor Ill do myself.

I shot my mirror with my paintball gun on accident as well. so I need to replace that. Its heated. Anyone got one?

SO you ball joint broke and your wheel fell off? Usually they both dont happen but i see it did.

If you're going to do this yourself, you'll really need to get one of those torque wrench thingies, and go back and retorque everything you've ever worked on before.

SO im confused, did it actually break the ball joint or control arm, cause it just looks like your wheel was improperly installed and took the studs out when it broke, then possibly did other damage because of that.

 

yea after futher inspection, i noticed that my ball joint is fine:







so i think my knuckle is bad which caused my hub to be messed up somehow. anyways i just need to replace the disc and the hub, possibly the knucle. oh and the fender.

 

i'd be replacing studs / hub all round.
they may have been overtightend and stretched, i doubt that they were put on loose.
i can't believe after you heared the noise you didnt look to see whats up right away.

 

this is crazy, ive never seen anything like that before...

 

so im damn sure that somehow the lug nugs were screwed up. in anycase all i need is a new hub and disc. oh and fender. but does anyone know if the hub can be replaced seperatly from the knuckle. the oil pan and fascia are fine. just the disc and lugs were broken.

 

Interesting story although by this picture, it looks to me like nothing's broken that could have cause your wheel to come off except one stud. This means that the breakage of 1 stud caused your wheel to come off. From that, I'll deduce the following story:

Someone hates you at work and decided to untorque 4 of the 5 lugs. These being on the left, would undo themselves everytime you brake until you only had one left.

 

actually two studs are broken and if it wheel wasnt tightened down, that make this outcome very plausable.

in that pic the disc is angled because of dragging from the tow ttruck on and off. all of the studs were shorter, like snapped off and one was broken completely.

so you guys think someone loosened all four and one was holding it on. cause it was fine all weekend then driving on the highway on sunday i noticed a sound. then this on monday morning.

36 mm, I'll lend it to you.

 

1. you don't need a hub. just 5 wheels studs. they're about $1.50 each from the parts store.
pull the caliper and rotor off and you can change the studs by knocking the broken ones out with a hammer, then using some flat washers and a 12mm x 1.25mm nut to pull the new ones into place. you might run into some clearance issues with the dust shield in the back, but that's easy enough to fix with tin snips.

2. clean the crap off the rotor and see if you actually need to replace it. if it's just scratched on the corner, clean the stuff off and drive away. probably didn't ruin it.

3. throw that wheel away. I wouldn't trust it except for $5 in scrap metal. those things are cast aluminum and pretyt thin in the area yours got gouged up. replacements are pretty cheap at a junkyard.

4. whoever the person was that last mounted that wheel, DON'T EVER LET THEM TOUCH YOUR CAR AGAIN.

 

What if he was the one who last mounted the wheel.....

i did put those front wheels on when i rotated them. but my mechanic said my bearings went bad cause of misalignment. same thing happened to him once. i wish i read about replacing the stud cause now im getting it towed into the city to fix it all at my moms shop for like $270.

bad wheel bearing would become very loud, you would have known something is up cause you would have heard it (unless you bumper the music loud all the time)

studs are extremely easy to replace. a couple bucks a stud, and takes about 10 min (if you were doing all 5 at one).

yea it was really loud. like i was bumping and i heard it clearly. it started quiet and got extremely loud within one day till fall off.

 

actaull i wont do it myself. but this sadly will def postpone my purchase of the shocks til after the holiday. im really pissed.

okay so car has been fixed for about a week or more now. but i still hear some sort of grinding/rubbing. i should say that i did not replace the pads, but they did replace the shock tower for some ungod known reason.

these are what were replaced. and my mech is some sort of perogi and said it was my brakes and itll go away but it hasnt. also i corrected my dust shield but it still makes noise.

Whats wrong with the wheel, only the inside is scraped up a little bit...Its not like the wheel malfunctioned......

I'd have to say lug nuts, but you would feel the wheel wobble all over when steering and the loud *** sound.

No way a ball joint did any of this. Bad ball joint is easy to pick out. Jack car up, now just shake the tire a bit and if it moves side to side(not so hard you move the steering wheel) the ball joint is not doing its job and needs replacement. It just keeps the wheel straight and cannot be align if you have a bad ball joint. I drove on one for half a year before a mech told what it was, it didn't feel solid.

Can a hub bearing just freeze up and break all the studs?

 

naw my ball joint is fine as far as i know. but it is hard trying to check my **** when its like 15 degrees out side. but where are you located? im near SE wisco and used to work in pleasant prairie.

Sorry dude, that does suck. I remember back in High School a buddy of mine had this samething happen to him. His girlfriends ex-boyfriend loosed his lug nuts while in class. About a 1/2 mile into his drive home off comes the wheel and he slid a good 80 feet on one front rotor. Man was he pissed.
