Phantom Grip LSD Conversion
Phantom Grip LSD Conversion
I was just wondering if any members have used this conversion kit on their cars. Their website says that the kit is for 98 and up maximas with a manual tranny.
Does the manual tranny for 95-97 differ is some way that this kit won't work?
My car was swapped to manual but i can't remember if the donor car was a 97 or 98.

Only difference I've found in a quick look through FAST is the diffs.
Look it up, see if there's anything else different, like the bellhousing or case itself.
From what I've read, the Phantom Grip is absolute crap. Search on the org, see what you can find.

The diffs should be identical from 95 to 99. The only difference is the electric speed sensor that started in 98(?), but the diff is still exactly the same.
The phantom grip is a friction type LSD. The difference is that a real friction LSD uses clutch packs, while the phantom grip just rubs together metal parts. I expect it would wear MUCH faster than a normal differential.

I think it would be easier and more cost efficient to get an AE VLSD, or even a I30/canadian maxima vlsd. the phatom grip from what ive read is not too good, if i was going to upgrade from my VLSD, id go with a quaife, but then id need a non lsd tranny to put it in
thanks everyone for your responses. i've read some info on some other forums and the reaction seems to be 50/50. however no one prefers it over a real LSD. i was actually just looking into a quaife diff but you have to call them for pricing. i remember Cattman had the group deal earlier in the year but ready for something like this at the time.
Basically i am going to be replacing my clutch so i am just looking at some options as to what else i can upgrade while the tranny is down and open. any ideas anyone?
I already have an exedy stage 1 clutch and fidanza flywheel. Its going to be replaced with a SPEC stage 2.

Definitely get the tranny opened up and have the diff bearings replaced and re-shimmed at a minimum. I would do a full rebuild.
No point in putting more torque into a tranny that is weak from worn bearings.

thats why i love this site... they make alot of mods for the max honestly and if someone would use them all they would have one pretty badass max, for about a week...
but some of them are **** and noone would really know that if it wasn't for your guy's experience, this is something i would have prolly bought and then regreted it later, but now i can save the time and money, thanks guys
heres your emmy award lol

I would not put a phantom grip in a FWD car. in an AWD car that experiences very little wheelspin they are not that bad, but in a spin-prone FWD car, you are going to gall up your spider gears with a quickness.
Cost of non-lsd + PG is same as LSD. However, with LSD you're gonna need the matching axel, so that will cost more.
As far as I know, since being on .org (before it was .org), and PG was offered, I remember 3 people having PG. No complaints, no failures. I think the bad reviews comes from .org members trolling other forums and reading their reviews. However, not many here have used PG in a Maxima.
How long do you plan on keeping your Maxima? If you get rid of your Maxima before the PG fails, the PG might be a good option to take from a financial standpoint.

there wasn't much info on here for the PG on other maximas. the other review on other sites were almost 50/50. there was a review from nissan mag for a G20 that installed the PG and it worked out really well for them.
but i will look at other options such as the quaife or the VLSD for the long run.
