Newbie question?

How do you know when to change your oil and what differences does it have on the car? ( or what are it's functions?)

Thanks guys
Jay

Most people just change it every 3,000 miles.

if your oil light is coming on when you come to a stop its about due time..

car will run bad if the oil isn't changed.. sluggish.. could blow the engine too

changing your oil every 3k is like brushing your teeth every 20 minutes, there is no reason for it, on a normal oil you can change it every 5-6k and you'll be fine, but I would recomend using synthetic and you can go for 10-12k w/out changing your oil, goodluck

if you get synthetic oil, make sure you get synthetic oil filter also

well, in that case I guess brushing teeth every 20 minutes should be a religious activity

Good question.... Important one

It is recommended you change your oil and filter every 3000 miles or every 3 months which ever comes first. Oil cools and lubricates the engine. There is a lot of metal friction going on in there, you go figure how long your car will last?

3000 miles my ****, thats one big waste of money to do it that often! I do mine every 5k-8k miles and its just fine, oil is a little thick but its not chunky or black

well this concerns me. Im at 10000 km since a service and right after I start the car from cold (I haven't noticed if it does it when its hot) the oil light gives a few flickers then goes out. is my oil stuffed? oil is at full mark. this baby doesn't used a drop.

don't worry

Mine does that too, it blinks 1-3 times at cold startup. if it stays on, maybe low oil or oil pressure sendng unit check needed.

i just do mine

with regular dino, oem filter every 5k miles (easier for me to remember)

remember oil companies and oil changing companies are the ones that created the 3k slogan. if i remember right the manual says every 7500 miles.

if you read your manual, when the oil light goes on when you are driving..it means its too late. You loose, go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

its cheap insurance.

Right, changing oil every 3,000 is a waste of money. Tests have proven that oils are still good after 3,000 miles. Just make sure to check the oil level frequently. I change mine between 5,000 and 7,000, especially since I do a lot of highway driving and rack up the miles quick.

1. if your oil light has come on other than at start-up... you've most likely alread done some damage.

2. the concept of changing oil at 3k is overkill. Oil can last much longer... however most filters can't. So change at 3k unless you have a filter which you know will last longer. OEM filter=every 3k miles change the oil.

I have never heard of a synthetic oil filter, can you explain to me how it would differ from a regular oil filter?

I would also like to know more about this but I think that the Nissan Filter works best.

what about oil pan? should it be removed and cleaned inside once a year or so? there must be sediment and sludge there on high-mi cars?

change oem filter every 3k?

what are you talking about? i think it's recommended to change oil filter every 3.5 or 7k depending on driving habits. check:

http://www.nissandriven.com/owning/V...tml#schedule02

this info is from nissan.

yeah.. changing oil every 3k miles is a waste of money. That's why I change oil in my car every 3333.3 miles.

Also, that way I always know when it's time to change oil, ie when the odometer hits XX3333.3, XX6666.6, and XX0000.0.
