transmission slowly going, what now????

i fuxored, 1st gear is starting to slip gradually and its weird but sometimers its perfect??? i had my mechanic clean the throttle body and a new set of platinum plugs as well, he said the same thing. i might make it through the winter, but i need to know how much should i expect to pay for a rebuild and is a used one taking too much of a risk??? local shop says 1,850.00 plus tax and i did'nt ask how much to install a used one. goddamn it to hell, this really sucks, anyone thats local to collegeville help me out??? suggestions please!!!! thanks in advance

Actuall it's the other way around, the rebuild is the one with the risk. $1850 rebuild FTL. Get one w/warranty for $200-400 used on car-part.com

it all depends on the junk yard. Car-part.com is an inventory website for junkyards. Just a way to search/locate & compare mileage + pricing. Than you just call the junkyard up & go from there. Basically, it is the coolest website for used parts EVER, especially when making large purchases like engine/trans.

lol, ive gone through the exact same thing. mine was the reverse (also automatic). it slowly kept getting worse and worse...luckily i live in d uluth which is on a big hill. drove the car around for a while without reverse at all. my options up here were $2000-$2500 to get my tranny rebuilt (5 year warranty) or option 2 which is the one i did....i got a junk yard tranny and had a dude put it in for me. tranny cost me $450 and dude put it in for $500. i do most of my own maintance work but didnt feel like diving into a tranny. used tranny has a 90 day warranty from the junk yard so im taking my chances. even if i had to go trough 2-3 trannys i would still be ahead i guess. we shall find out if i made the right choice or not. i figure ive only got a couple years left on my 95, so if the tranny last that long ill be happy!
