What is th best upgrade for an auto?

Besides a Y-pipe and intake what would be the best performance upgrade for an auto. I was thinkin like an ECU upgrade or an OOVI. What have you guys done and what do you reccommend?

Nightkid08 Jan 11, 2008 04:40 PM

5spd conversion? lol, but really...vbmod, high stall torque converter, tranny cooler all help.

VI/suspension/wheels :mrgone:

Aftermarket intakes don't do auto's any good. Some actually cause a loss of throttle response. Keep the stock intake on your auto, it gives the best overall throttle response.

maxboy325 Jan 11, 2008 05:13 PM

5 SPEED SWAP ITS LIKE ANOTHER CAR....................SERIOUSLY

Thats right on. With the stock intake on the auto, the low end is very strong and the torque curve is more or less flat through out 4K Rpm. No dynos here, just the feel of it.

NmexMAX Jan 11, 2008 05:29 PM

3.5 swap . . .. . . .

tallkid2201 Jan 21, 2008 11:24 AM

i dont think the intake argument is true. i put a short ram in my 97 and i got better throttle response and i bit more hp.

again....not dyno proven but its all about the feel.

that and i beat my friends 03 max

Google much?

A stall is the best modification to an automatic.

Unless you plan on spending a lot of money on the car to make it decently fast, I would just drive it and not race it. Save your money and buy something meant to go fast, not a family sedan. Maxima's are nice cars to drive, not race. Keep it that way.

Way OT but, are those 04+ TL wheels on your maxima? They look good nonetheless but would look even better w/ a drop.

:sprint: They may sound cool, but not worth the loss of low end power.

Forced induction. Period.

P.S. It's a Variable Intake out of a 2000 Maxima, not a 20OO Maxima. ;)

You're gonna have to tell us how deep your pockets are first........

Mctwist77 Jan 22, 2008 05:21 PM

Well, I might go with a new car.

Which would be a better bet

White 1999 5SPD MAX W/119K for $5100

OR
Black 2001 5SPD MAX W/130K for $5400

Both are fully loaded

Tough call, but I think I'd go for the the 99 due to lower miles. Check them both out for yourself, you may dismiss one, or both for that matter.

Mctwist77 Jan 22, 2008 05:50 PM

I know what to look for on the 1999, but what should I look for on the 2001 anything inparticular? Also, 4th gen shocks and Y pipe wont fit on the 5th gen right?

STILLENGLE Jan 22, 2008 05:57 PM

Go with the 5th gen with the DEK in it. second best you can go with besides the VQ35

ptatohed Jan 22, 2008 06:40 PM

Hey McTwist, are you a skateboarder?

Mctwist77 Jan 22, 2008 06:58 PM

Nah, I snowboard. But I got this SN when I was like 8 yrs old. I was looking for a cool word or somethin, and I had one of the tony hawk video games in my hand and saw the word "mctwist" I thought it sounded cool so thats what I have been using ever since I can remember.
Wow that was a tear jerker:bawling:

Quiz: What is a McTwist?

Bonus: Who was it named after?

Mctwist77 Jan 22, 2008 07:14 PM

I believe its a move where you do a complete flip in the air while at the same time do a 360 degree spin.

It was named after the great Edward Mctwist the 4th, of course!

On the 2001 should I just look for the core support and just poke around in the engine bay ? Test the shocks and struts and take it for a spin?

And a 4th gen Y pipe and suspension is not interchangeable with a 5th gen right?

Rear suspension bolts up just fine, the strut-knuckle bolts are spaced wider on the 5th gen, though.

Answer correct, bonus wrong. Mike McGill. Famous 80's / early '90s skateboarder. He was one of the original Powell Peralta (now just called Powell) Bones Brigade members. Like Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerro, Steve Caballero. ;)

t6378tp Jan 22, 2008 08:08 PM

I had a auto with a tranny cooler, drop mod, and mobile 1 fluid. and the best mod was a 5-speed swap.

it was good for about 15hp and 3tenths off my 1/4. next best thing I would suggest is a tranny cooler and drop mod or tranny cooler and vb

91parkave Jan 22, 2008 08:36 PM

I understand the 5 speed but god damn what is it wit yall not everyone wants to push a stick in/and out of gridlock traffic EVERYDAY....The max came witha 4speed auto and a 5speed manual, this man wants to upgrade a auto...ok back on topic....get the cooler first and if you can afford it go for the VB upgrade after that a higher stall TC is your next upgrade....besides that have the Mf'er rebuilt with stronger clutches etc...
