Redlined it today...Maybe more

Hey guys. I was merging onto the highway today and two people on the on-ramp decided to stop. Me being the aggressive one was trying to beat oncoming traffic and also test out my max's acceleration abilities. I put in into first gear, stepped on it, and soooo stupidly looked into the rear view mirror, totally disregarding the tach, and I'm pretty sure I went over through redline and possibly got it to 7000 rpms. The worst part is when I hit that the car seemed to pull back (it felt like when you down shift without rev matching) and i heard some kind of grind noise. Is there some kind of safety feature that kicked on to keep the revs down or am I SOL??? The car ran fine after, it's just that noise is killing me just thinking about it.

Thanks.

Sounds like you just hit the rev limiter which all cars have on them and its nothing to worry about as the "pulling back" you describe is the limiter at work. As for the grinding noise.... Diagnosing an uncommon noise without actually being there is next to impossible. You will get about 20 different possible causes from other members.

Yes, every car with fuel injection has a fuel cut. You can NOT just pound your way WOT through the fuel cut.

Max is 6550, if your tach indicated 7000 then your tach is off, which is very likely.

Yes, the car is fine.

You can only overrev the motor if you downshift into too low of a gear, i.e. http://youtube.com/watch?v=tD3pGEraVLA .

Our tachs are extremely "generous". If I leave mine in 1st and shift late (auto), my needle will shoot past 7k.

The rev limiter will stop you over revving if you are already in gear .. but if your in 3rd say and drop to 1st the rev limiter won't save you and it will over rev.. lucky you didn't break something if you did it at decent speed

I did that in a Mazdaspeed 3 and the tranny didn't like it too well. I told the dealership that I put it into 1st and got a noise that didn't sound too good. New transmission under warranty FTW!!
