upper oil pan leaking

i went to the mechanic because of a leak my car has been having he found that the leak was coming from the upper oil pan. anyways how hard is that to fix and how much should it cost? he quoted me at $520, that sounds like alot to me but then again im no mechanic and have no idea how much a job like that runs. so please let me know what you guys think about the price. thanks

You're basically paying for labor. Parts shouldn't be that expensive. You have to drop the transmision to get access to the upper oil pan. There is no gasket, all you use is the 999 grey gasket maker silicon. You need to replace the rear main seal and probably do the front main seal not expensive along with the 2 pieces of rubber (I forget what there called) that seal around the curved section of the oil pan. Also you need the 2 o-rings for the oil pump and the 2 differential seal for the transmission (he has to pull the axels to drop the tranny). If you're car is a 5 speed manual you might want to look into replacing the clutch while you're at it. Just a thought.

The tranny doens't need to come down to do the upper pan.
It is a big job, make sure the car is up on a lift, it's a lot easier.

It's up to you. You can put it off as long as it doesn't bother you and you keep checking your oil elvel I have a TC cover leak, and i've been quoted $400 to fix that too. It's a question of whether it's worth it to you personally.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But there's really no need to pull the motor just for those issues.

No reason to replace the chain, but if you're going to have the front cover off, put in the updated tensioner and guide.
