Q about running without muffler?

I know people say that running without a muffler makes no hp, but I tried it today, and I notice a little more high end, and no loss in torque(butt dyno). My question is, what are the probelms with running without a muffler. I don't think I will actually do this much, because it is so loud, but I am just curious what effect this has on my car.

Thanks

Nevermind...

You're right...continue

The exhaust acts as a big silencer to your car. If you take it off you will reduce some backpressure and be EXTERMELY loud, therefore is will have very little if any affect on 1/4 mile runs, but if you think you are doing better, you probably are so keep doing it. However it is illegal to drive without one.

Wow, are we all a bunch of jerks???? Man this board is really starting to suck! Why the hell doesn't anyone ever answer any questions??? It's always "use the search function" What the hell????

To answer your question, your car will ahve less back pressure, losing low end torque, but otherwise should be fine. Make sure to be careful about running NOS or a SC this way as you can lean yourself out fairly easily. Also, most cops love to hassle people for things like this and it can get pretty spendy so be careful, but have fun!

Ok put in "muffler" as your search word. "DrivinDaMax" had a thread called "illegal to take off the muffler" posted on 10/22. Hope that helps. There's the addy http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hlight=muffler

What I actually did was leave the muffler straped into the bracket, so its hard to tell, plus its not as near as loud as ydrsbtr or murdock.

Whew...atleast somebody's got my back! And JdawgX, I'm not trying to be a jerk and I'm sorry if you see me as one. I, as well as many others, are just trying to get the point across to use the search functions, so repetative questions are not asked. If people kept asking stupid questions, you would never have space to post serious concerns. And Canuck was partially right this time becaue even that thread does not really explain the advantages/disadvantages, he would have seen this if he just typed the word "muffler" in. And by the way, I have tried to answer over 500 posts on this forum and this is the first one I have resorted to the search function for. I only use it when its necessary (this one time), and it proved I was right so F*CK OFF!

But my question still stands, will this effect gas mileage or anything else?

You will probably see a samll decline in gas mileage as you are flowing a lot more air through the motor because you now have much less back pressure. With your intake and y-pipe you will flow a LOT more air and therefor a lot more fuel. But it won't be to large a decrease. Hope this hels a little.

Loss in backpressure, therefore loss in low end.

I ran open manifolds at the drags on a blown clutch and motor mount and it ran me a 14.6xx. I dunno if doing this got me a time like this, because there are far too many variables involved. There was a definate loss in low end torque. Anyway, supposedly running like this is hard on the exhaust valves. I havent seen any bad repercussions from doing this yet
