Ques about EVAP Canister Purge Volume control valve?

Alright I have been getting the famous 0111 code for a while now actually months so I decided to start ripping stuff off today since it was warm. But I took off the purge volume control valve and the lil black valve as 1 piece.
The lines were still connected.

Well I was just gonna take off the one valve on top of the manifold until I noticed that the line going from the valve to the black round thing felt as if it was full of charcoal. I mean you could sqeeze the hose n hear it crunk. So I took it all off.

Went out to the garage and took the line apart. And boom here comes charcoal pouring out. I mean tons of it. The hose was full and so was the round black thing and there was also charcoal in the valve itself.

But my ques is there shouldnt be charcoal in this stuff should there? I dont think there should be. I dunno. I know there charcoal in the evap canister but I didnt think that it was suppose to travel all the way up there. It just seems like it stopped the lines up.

Also here 2 pics of just how much charcoal was in those 3 things.

Yea I was sure there wasnt suppose to be but wanted to be sure. I cleaned it all out now. But what should I check into it if happens again? The actually evap canister itself? It prob needs replaced if it allowing charcoal through the system?

If debris is going from the canister into the lines, I'd go ahead and replace it regardless of it failing or not; it can't really do it's job 100% any longer. I don't remember if there's a filter or not on the A32 EVAP system, if there is it either blew out or is missing, if not then it's likely purely a canister issue.

Yea I might go ahead n replace it. I cleaned it all out maybe the code will go away now. But when I cleaned it out. I checked the line that runs from the canister the long hose in the engine bay and it didnt feel clogged up so I just left it be.

I dont know if there is any type of filter either. Dont know much about the EVAP system.

The car does have 241K on it so maybe it just time for some replacements. Guess we will just see.

Does anyone have any idea if there is something that prevents the charcoal from passing through the system?

It doesnt seem like the charcoal could just have free access through the system. I havent checked the hose again nor the codes even though my CEL is back on but I also have other codes.

Same thing happened to me and I dumped out a ton of loose charcol from the canister. Pretty sure that the charcol was oringially one block and broke up over time. My 0111 came back so I need to check the valve attached to the canister to see if that is clogged.

This code is such a PITA to track down.

maybe your purge control valve is stuck open allowing it to run through the lines all the time since it cannot close.

Alright so I cleaned out all the charcoal and the code went away for a lil bit. I checked it again the other day and the code was back and I went to check to see if the line had filled back up with charcoal and sure enough it had.

So what are the options here? Do I need a new canister? Will that fix the problem?

i hate to bump an old thread, but we're having the same problems with the 0111 code. Same thing as the op: charcoal at the purge control valve (black round thing). The charcoal, however, is more refined and doesn't appear to be in big chunks. The fsm describes some procedures, so i'm going to go over them tomorrow. I did clean it out the first time and it came back yesterday. I'm sure I'm going to find some more charcoal for the grill lol
looking for any input you might have. thank you!

seems like we'll need a new charcoal canister. http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...ap-system.html

the guy in that thread dumped out all the charcoal bits from the canister and ran it like that until he found a replacement. wonder if that affected the evap performance at all?

if there are loose charcoal particles in the lines and canister, you have to replace the canister. use a multimeter to test the valve.

advance or autozone sells canister for about $50

sounds reasonable. i've gutted the old one for now. got a new one from a local jy this weekend, but it's leaking charcoal as well (it was only $5 though).
