How do I tell if I have a Federal or CA spec 1996 Maxima?

Hi everyone,
I would like to order a "budget" Y pipe for my 1996 Maxima, and I need to know if it is a Fed or CA spec car. The car has always been in NJ, and was orig sold here as well. On the window sticker it does not say CA emmissions. Also on the underhood label, it just say "meets 1996 model year emmissions req" but it does not mention CA. Is that it, do I have a fed spec car? Are there any other clues that I can look for?

Thanks,
Zack

this is copy pasted directly from the 4th gen stickies, under heading FAQ
you need to do more searching before you ask questions like this

So how do I tell if my car is Cali or Fed spec?

Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The 12th character is the destination:

N = Canada
V = California
U = US, not California

If the car was originally purchased in NJ, wouldn't that answer your question?

95-98 exhausts are the same regardless of cali or fed spec, I went through this years ago when I installed my y-pipe (5 to be exact). Only the 99 cali-specs are different, which use the 5th gen style exhaust system which is more limiting.

NO because cars sold in NJ or any state for that matter had the option of being Cali spec. I know that my 1995 Pathfinder ,and my 1995 SE-V6 King CAb are CA spec, and both are NJ trucks.

Negative, my vehicle was purchased in CT, but it is a cali-spec.

And btw, getting a vehicle that is "CA emission friendly" on the east coast is not common as you two make it out to be. If you bought one, it was either pure luck, or you specifically asked for it. And, not all makes and models offer a CA emission spec package outside the state of CA.

Not true at all. NYS has been a CARB state as long as I can remember. And for many years, MA/VT/ME are CARB as well. So although VT and ME are tiny states population-wise, NY/MA are not.

Are we going to start talking about each state individually now..... I don't think so.

My car was originally from NJ and is also technically a Cali-spec car. I have an early-build '95, though, and that alone makes it different from most A32's.
