Exactly how loud is a Y-Pipe?

I just got in a group deal on custommaxima.com and bought a Cattman Y-pipe and am now wondering how loud it really is. I know, i shoulda asked this BEFORE I got it, but I get impatient sometimes. Anyway, I'm not looking for decibal estimations, but will I be able to hear my stereo when on the highway? Will it be quiet under normal acceleration? Will I wake my neighbors when I start my car? Set off alarms in the parking garage??

I have a K&N cone filter, RT cat and an fat Apexi exhaust. What do you guys know/think?

LOUD?

I found that my intake was louder than the Y pipe. I could hear a growl at first ignition and a "drone" at 2300 to 2500 rpms but nothing that killed the stereo sound. With that catback that you have, there may some more noise though.

go watch one of my movies in the general forum. I have the cattman y-pipe (non-lined flex section) + JWT intake + Apexi cat-back.

Yes, I've wondered about that too. I hear that all the Y pipes except for the Cattman have some sort of hissing sound. My question is, what about if I was to keep the stock muffler/B pipe/ Cat, would it still be loud/hissing??

Before I added a (stillen) Y-pipe, I had a (stillen) pop chgr. and cat back.......The sound was harmonic and mellow with nice growl at higher rpm's, due to the pop chgr. When I introduced the y-pipe and an r.t. cat, it became much louder! However will not drown out your stereo. I personally listen to my car more than the stereo now!

I've had a y pipe for a bit now and I can only hear it on hard acceleration. Note that I hve an intake too. Highway speeds car sounds same as stock unless you press gas hard.

Well i installed my budget Y and cat back at the same time.....and honestly I don't hear a peep out of my Y pipe at all....only the Apexi...it's a nice growl but as you hit upper RPM's my CAI drowns out all.....I hear no BEES or any of the sounds other people related to this mod....guess I got the lucky pipe...and it also fit like a glove...

I think a few of you are misunderstood... a y-pipe MAKES an aftermarket exhaust sound loud. so if you install a greddy catback and y-pipe at the same time then you need to understand that the y-pipe is making most of the noise but you hear if through the muffler.

no you have it the wrong way around.. its the muffler thats making the noise.. not the y pipe..

remember you have always had a catback before your y pipe..

i have had two different y pipes and stock muffler.. and my car has never been loud.. NEVER..

plus the greddy is a loud catback to begin with...

Well that's a fact as most know but also some are also recieving the bees in the can from the Y pipe itself...so sometimes it's just stated that we don't or we do hear noise from the Y pipe directly..not indirectly thru the other exhaust components

But your point is valid.....

ok... I agree that the bees come from the y-pipe... but when i had my apexi cat back on without a y-pipe it was 1/3 as loud as now... and i hear the sound coming from the exhaust like it never did before

didn't you ride in my car? didn't you hear how quiet it was? ask geomax.. he told me to rev my engine.. and when i did he thought i was stock..

now i know when i get a catback its going to get louder.. but thats because of the catback..

the reason your catback got louder with the Y pipe is because your catback is flowing much more free.. without the pre-cats.. the air is flowing more through the muffler.. but its still the catback thats making the sound .. not the y pipe..

That's my setup Cattman Y and CAI. Everything behind the RT Cat is stock. Not loud at all. The loudest part is still the CAI, and that's only at WOT. Crusing at 80 mph, total sleeper, just like stock.

Honestly probably only like 5HP at most.. This is what I did and its very nice.. HKS intake, HKS exhaust, STOCK b-pipe, HKS muffler, Cattman Y.... The b-pipe gives you that fart noise that is so unappealing.. This is pre-Supercharger though.. now as little amount of backpressure possible is wanted... plus the b pipe on NA really doesnt give you much HP.. Maybe 2.

I did not like the noise level of my Greddy Catback with the a y-pipe. IF you have an auto, the drone of a catback is increased. Start up has a nice growl, but driving got annoying to me. My 2cents

Where did you guys go to get your Y pipes installed? A special aftermarket tuner or any muffler shop?

i went to a muffler shop in Pueblo, Colorado and got my Y-pipe, RT Cat, and Greddy Exhaust installed. I can't quote the price but it was very very reasonable. If you're located anywhere around here...i can give you a number to call...

TRanslation:

The bees sound from a Y-pipe is an indicator of a good engine, with strong compression. If you've got a Y=pipe, but no bees sound, then your VQ motor may not be in good shape. Also, a Max with a loud exhaust note will have more power than a Max with a quiet exhaust note.

I don't agree with him, but that's what he's saying.

I think this sound come when your car is in a good conditon I mean your cylindar compresion is good

There are guys that doesn't accelarat much then there exhaust will not be loud this is one other reason ..

Thanks

your Y-pipe doesn't have to be loud for it to actually perform well. think about it...it eliminates two precats i think...so it lets your exhaust flow more freely, creating more power...

Cattman Y-Pipe

I searched and searched....
Sorry for not finding the answer, but I want to know what happens when you install a Cattman Y-pipe, and if all goes well without fitment issues, will it have problems passing smog inspections? Should I definitely keep my stock y-pipe and have it handy for smog situations? Anyhow, I definitely can't wait to pick up and have the y-pipe slapped in. Thanks in advance.

Anyone have any ideas about the CA smog index levels? Aren't they a bit more strict than Fed specs? I'm sure it won't be a problem though, I'll just have to bring it in to my buddies at the smog place and have them custom tune the smog equipment so that even a lawnmower can pass

Re: Re: LOUD?

Your Apex exhaust is a catback, right?? If so, then Catback and Y, well, you'll get a whole lot more power, but there will be noise.

Quietest Y setup is with stock B pipe and stock muffler. Stock cat or RT cat doesn't really matter, in terms of noise.

Next quietest is the Y with upgraded B pipe.

After that, you get considerable noise.

I have CAI,Cattman Y,RT Cat, Stock B, Stock muffler. I only vaguely here a grizzle(very very very very muted bees in can sound) from the Y. My CAI is still much louder. I put on my Y a year after the CAI, so I knew what the Y added. If I did both at the same time, I probably would have never noticed the sound of the Y at all.
