Shift lever sound?

I am sure this question has been asked before but how can I fix the sound that my shift lever makes when you apply any sort of pressure to it in any direction. It's almost like it is rubbing up against something.
What is it?
How can I fix it?

I have a 96 GXE 5spd (obviously)

thank you
Jake

HI - If it's a manual and the sound is sort of a grind, low-pitch thing, it's probably cause you're making a more solid linkage and that's just sound conducted thru from the tranny. Does the pitch change as you speed up ? Especially if you don't hear much when you're NOT touching the lever.

I tried and couldnt find anything.

So is there no way to get rid of the sound or do I just have to live with it? and why does it make this sound?

you can replace the shifter bushing ... check the classified forums or PM Fantickarockford .... or, buy a new on online. the noise comes from the transfer of vibration and "spinn" from the gear stacks in the tranny. the noise is carried down the shift linkage rod to the shifter and a new bushing would provide more of a coushin for the vibration, so if it is bothering you that bad, the new bushing should fix it.

If your tranny/engine is making that much noise, you should have it checked out.

I agree with Dave .... can't hurt to have someone who knows what the sound really is to look at it.
