Well, 20 hours later (on top of the 40 hours I already put in), I'm still where I was two weeks ago. I made a change in the design and it's not working out. Time to rethink this one step. After I get passed this one step, it's all downhill from here.

No hints for now.....but maybe after I get passed this one roadblock I'll start posting the "under construction" pics.

so...when installing an aftermarket hub/ steering wheel, you also have to remove the clockspring? (which im sure wont be used since cruise control will be gone)?

Also, what about the horn connection? I seen someone on the org here say u lose the horn...

Really should've made a new thread for this, not bumped a 9 month old one.

It really depends on what kind of modifications you want to make, and what hub adapter you use. The clock spring is used for the horn, airbag, and cruise control.

You can see his hub either contains it's own clockspring (for just the horn) or mounts over top of the original piece. It's got the horn wires coming through the adapter itself.

That's correct. The OEM 'clockspring' goes bye-bye. Cruise control, horn are gone as well.

Thread is not that old.....

True, my quick release and short hub has a wire for the horn, but it doesn't make the connection on the backside!! IMO, the clock spring in a misnomer, for our cars anyway. The way I understand it, it's not really a spring. It's a plastic disc coated with copper on both sides so that all of the electronics on the steering wheel and the air bag will work at any position of the steering wheel. behind the disc in some cars is an electric wire that looks like tape coiled up if that wire kinks you can lose power to the steering wheel. If my thinking is incorrect, I'm sure pmohr will correct me.....

Actually never taken apart an A32 clockspring, so I just assumed it was the regular coiled up style. I guess it would be fine if you could modify the hub or the clockspring to be able to use them together, but I can't even remember the last time I used my horn (other than to scare people under the hood).

It's easy enough to rig a secondary switch for the horn, or the CC. Only thing to be too concerned with is the loss of the airbag really. I agree with you Wiz... the clockspring in the A32 is a joke. It would probably be easy enough to rig the same sort of set up and do away with the plastic pos. With the air bag, just don't 'need' it and you're fine. lol

damn. Oh well, I can just rewire it somewhere. Mind me asking what kind of connection the horn is? Like is it just a ground wire or 2 wires etc.

Looks good. Too bad you didn't use real carbon fiber though, it doesn't quite match the rest of the interior. btw, it isn't really harder than fiberglassing.

I was working on a fiberglass boost gauge myself... I haven't messed with it a lot though.

Per the FSM it's a single wire going through a 3 pin connector, RS2.

Jaxx ... welcome to the .Org, but you might want to know who somebody is (Wizzy) before you go mouthing about what they didn't use. If you read this entire thread, he states he used CF .... even told us where he got it. Wizzard has been MOTM (IIRC, a couple times) and had his car pictured in at least one magazine. He does the best work on the .Org IMO using CF!

And you think you're special? :

Thanks for the multiple compliments and support JtzMax. Very much appreciated.

I'd like to clarify what Jaxx was getting at. Jaxx was referring to where the real CF is utilized, and the outcome is hard, shiny, strong and lightweight if done right; whether it's an overlay or completely made out of CF. For example, my dash kit is real CF. I used a vinyl with a CF pattern to simulate the look of real CF on my steering wheel gauge pod. I wish I had the skills/knowledge to do the real thing. Searching the internet and asking people how to do it yielded very little results, so I resorted to the method herein.

Jaxx, how about doing a writeup and sharing with the org?? I know I'd sure love to learn.

if it's just one wire then its probably ground. Just hooking it up to a button would make it work rite?

I do want to appolagize (although - not removing my 'yeahright') by not fully understanding what he meant.

A write up would be great, for either fiberglass or CF (but I'm thinking this thread pretty much covers the CF portion). I've see some very good fiberglass work done, but it takes skill, time, and patience.

The think I appreciate most is that it's your own handy work and that it's front and center. Every second you are in the drivers seat you can feel that warm and fuzzy feeling because you did it yourself!

Many congrats. It looks amazingly professional. I keep wanting to wrap my whole center console in something "leather like" but haven't had the time (and judging from your project, the skill) to sadly.

I love it. Keep up the good work!

Here’s a pic of my steering column as it was for the past 6 months. (old shift boot and e-brake boot)

Now we’re caught up to present day.

The next phase is when the real fun began!
Wiz this off topic a bit but I noticed you have a MOMO E brake handle . I have searched around and cant find my answer. Im looking on swapping my E brake handle with the PitStop MOMO one. Do you need any of the adaptors MOMO sells to install this? If so which one? Also which leather boot did you purchase? because Im sure the stock one probably won't fit well over the MOMO E brake handle and It will be a good opportunity to upgrade mine since I will have it apart.

Sorry for the late reply. Just realized I forgot to respond.

See PM for your most recent questions. My leather boot is from Redline Goods, one of our forum sponsors. Believe it or not, I simply ordered a replacement with no special instructions. I had to stretch it slightly to get it to go over the MOMO ebrake handle. It's a perfect snug fit and doesn't go anywhere. I guess I got lucky that everything worked out so well.

Since then, I've replaced my leather e-brake boot (and shift boot) with carbon fiber...

No problem.. I'll problem check out your PM.

The boot in the pic is the carbon fiber one? or the first one you purchased from Redline? it looks like a perfect fit and it doesn't look strecthed at all. The reason I asked is because Redline gives you the option to order their boots 1" shorter or longer.

Nah, that's a really old pic. What you see are the Redline G. leather boots. I stretched my leather one, and my newer CF one as well.

I know Redline gives options on the shift boot, but I didn't know you can customize the e-brake boot. Adding or subtracting 1" from the e-brake boot doesn't make sense, it is what it is. Sure you're not mixing the two?

nah it is an option. I belive it was redline they special in custom boots right? I have the link saved in my computer at home. I think the boot in your old pic looks really good. You have pic of the new Carbon fiber one?
