Question about RE4F04A

This post may be flameworthy, but i'm trying to understand the transmission a little better.

Since getting the Y pipe and muffler done on my girlfriends car, I have noticed that with OD off, you go through gears 1, 2, and 3.

When you turn OD on, it seems it changes to 4th and then there seems like a half gear or something after that. 5th?

I know the Auto is a 4 speed, but how come the OD which is supposed to be fourth gear seems to have two gears in it?

Cheers

od off "keeps" you in 3rd gear. if you drive normal with od on then turn it off at arouns 60mph/120kmp you'll feel a kick. as if you downshifted in a manual.

There are only 4 gears, as you know. In my auto '99 there is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd lockup, and 4th lockup. Feels like 5 gears sometimes. Depending on the condition you can get 4th to "downshift" out of lockup and go to regular 4th. But if taking off normally it will follow the sequence described above.

In the 95's it might just go 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 4th lockup. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the TCM shift logic was revised through the years.

So yours never goes to 4th proper? Straight to lockup?

My '95 FWIW never enters lockup in 3rd unless I've got OD off, which I don't often do (not that I've driven the damn thing in a month or two...POS). It shifts just as you've stated, 1-2-3-4-4L.

Mine must do 1, 2, 3 in OD off and 1, 2, 3, 3 lockup and 4 lockup in OD on then.

I just heard the revs drop twice every time I put OD on and got a bit confused.

Thanks for the answers guys - makes sense now

That's correct. Quite different from earlier A32's that I've driven. Only time the normal 4th is selected is when i get it to "kick down" out of lockup.
