Failed emissions for the 3rd time, AAAARGH!!!

This sucks! I failed the first test because of codes 0304 (knock sensor) and 0707 (o2 sensor), fixed those, light came on again after a few days. Second test failed because of 0803 (map sensor) and 1302 (Map/baro solenoid), fixed those, light came back on 40 miles later. 0111 (EVAP), 0705 (EVAP), and 0903 (EVAP) this time. There's no way i can keep up with this car, it runs awesome, spent $600 in the last few months to fix things that don't affect engine performance and as of next month i can't legally drive it!!! If you ask me OBDII is a nightmare, at least from my experience. I don't even wanna bother anymore with my car, you fix one thing and something else comes up in a hurry. The worst part of all this is that the car actually RUNS GREAT!!! Sorry, i just feel like venting!

Question.....have these ever been changed.?
Do you really think that these parts should last 4evr?
Maximas are excellent cars man, but you gotta take care of it and it will do the same in return.

Request an extension on your registration and take that extra month to take care of the codes (as never ending as they may seem). Might be a headache now but in the end it'll be worth it.

Pull codes and take care of them before you retest. Carry the failure card with you in case you get pulled over and just tell them you are working on it.

Once you fail the inspection and the sticker on the windshield is past due you cannot get an extension. Only if the the OBDII showed "not ready" and was not past due, then you may request an extension.

Zachosz, where do you live? (it would help to figure out your options).

i ask because some state will have a waver, that if you spend more than $75 or $300 or whatever, you can get a 1 year waver for the emission testing.

Also, some states will do a tailpipe test if your ECU is not ready.

Check out your motor vehicle department website for waiver conditions.

I live in Chicago. As far as I know, after 3 failures you have to prove that you spent at least $450 in emissions related repairs to be eligible for a waiver. I'm not quite there yet, I spent around $300-$350 so far. The other option would be to take the car to a mechanic and get those issues fixed, then retest again. I'll see if i can get an extension, but i think there's an income requirement that i don't meet.

Snypa, I know Maximas are great cars, that's why i got one, and it has been a very very good car to me, the only thing i'm ticked off about is the bad timing of each cel and the lack of money to fix them as they come. I know things will break as the miles rack up, and that's fine, but can't they wait a couple of weeks till i pass emissions?

i had the same situation with my car. i just finally passed smog last monday here in cali. but to let you know i had the same CEL lights problems like yours had to replace the knock sensor and the evap valve canister 0905. I did all of the changes but there are parts out there you can see if you can find someone and just borrow their sensors. I replaced my evap valve canister from a salvage yard for 5 bucks and run it for a few days to see if any of the CEL comes up lucky i got it to work w/ no prob. not all sensor can be trusted but the evap valve 903 is triggering the other code 0705 and 0111. if u can get ur hands on one of the canister vent control it will eliminate the other codes. My mechanic told me that jap has problems w/ sensors it actually cycle to all the sensor triggering them all wrong. just make sure to drive for an 40plus miles for the computer to have a full cycle. good luck!!!

i'm in Chicago as well and had the same issue; one thing you can do is the following procedure:
1. Reset ECU
2. Drive about 40 miles don't turn off the car! and take it directly to the emissions test
I was able to pass the test even though my ECU was throwing a code and in fact my code came back soon after the test. It was all luck.

If you now that it takes 40 miles to trigger the light. With the light on, take a code scanner with you to the smog test. A block away from the test center, connect and erase the codes. Then take it in. The test does not take more than a couple of miles.

I tried this, what happens is you'll just receive a "Not Ready" result and it won't count for extending your time to get the emissions test and they won't do the test/
