cv joint!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so i was up trying to put on my new S Techs and since we started late and ran into several problems, we had to stop after the 2 front were put in.

i started my car to drive home then when i put it in reverse, there was this hellish clacking noise. i quickly put it in park and it clicks a little more and goes away. tried again. same thing.

friend tells me it's the cv joint. it's out of place. or. i guess the cv axle in not in the joint?

when were were working on the front passenger side, the brake moved so easily when the strut wasnt bolted on. i didn't know what it was when we were working on it, but it didn't look like a god thing. guess it turns out that that was the cv joint that was so loose. the driver side did not have that problem.

so basically i am just trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with my car right now. i would really prefer not to have to replace any parts right now and my friend says i might not have to if the cv axle is only out of place. i guess i would just pop it back in?

any ideas of what i should do? how would this happen in the first place? my car was driving fine today with no clicking on turns an whatnot. so i dont think its worn out, just out of place.

aghhhhhhhhhh

If it's the passenger side, there's no way for the axle to come out of the trans. It's bolted in place in a carrier (mounted to the side of the lower oil pan), which keeps it locked in place.

Does it look like either of the joints themselves have popped apart?

The outer CV joint has seperated from the axel shaft.

You need to open the boot, put the cv joint back onto the splined shaft and close it up again. Not a hard job, but very messy.

I accidentally pulled on my driver's side CV joint the wrong way when taking it out and the inner joint looked like it might have came apart? I fiddled with it some and pushed it back together like it was before I took it out but is it still ok?

Same thing happened to me on a car I was just working on. Luckily I was able to work the joint back in without opening the boot.

Bingo! Well I replaced the damn thing. Got it at O' Reilly's for $59 with a $75 core charge. Not bad! When I took the old cv axle out i open up the boot and saw how stripped down the end of the shaft was. I would feel alot more safe to ride on a new one than put that one back in. Anyways, thanks for your help guys.

BTW, I got all the springs in too!

For a price that cheap, it doesn't even seem worth the effort to put one back together; just buy a new one!
