Pros/Cons of Mud Flaps / Rain Guards
Hello to all , as you can see I am new here, purchased a 97 max se don't know the miles because it does not have white gauges....
I search for hours but unable to find a answer.....SPlash Guard / mud flaps will this effect handling in the rain.....I would image that they prevent the rain from properly exiting off the tire.......? Don't know if I should take them off for safety reasons

The flaps are a good 2 to 3 inches from the tire minimum, plus the fact that they are behind the tire leads me to believe there is no possible way they could block water from effectively exiting the tire. Hydroplaning occurs when water is trapped under the leading edge of the tire.

the next time it rains take your car for a road test and see what it feels like. then go home and remove the splash guards and roadtest again. i think you wont notice any difference but who knows. please report back with your findings.

So what exactly does having white gauges have to do with knowing the car's mileage? I don't have white face gauges in a couple of my cars but I still know the mileage.
Splash quards have been installed on cars for decades. Multitudes of makes and models either come off the showroom floor with them or get them installed after market. Not sure I've ever heard of a recall, TSB, or safety advisory related to hydroplaning or any other traction related issue(s) caused or contributed to by a splash guard.

The reason I say I don't know the milage is because I have a SE and I thought they only came with white gauges. So Iam under the impression they switch the cluster . The clock say 118,000 but I doubt . So I'll be looking for the proper cluster.....Good call ..I will take it out in the rain with flap and without. I will post the results. But think about it....When your behind a max or car without flaps look how much water is exiting as appose to a car with. How could it be the same.

about your flaps...they arent gonna hurt handling, they just keep your car a little cleaner. I wouldnt waste my time testing the car in the rain.

I don't mean handling like the way you guys interpet, but performance in the rain. Who thinks there no diffrence in hydro or better traction YOUR WRONG. I did test last night and I felt a good not major diffrence with them off. I took video with and without the flaps and you could see clearly the amount of water exiting away from the car. I have other question , I hope this one is not stupid also.

the water is being thrown from the tire
whether it hits a flat piece of plastic or not is irrelavent. the flaps will keep your car cleaner. that is it.
then again, the mudflaps add about 0.7 lbs to your overall weight, so you might want to think about that.

Hey!.. we're not talking about looks here people... were talking about safety and safety comes first and foremost.
I think we must all take heed of the questions posed by our bretheren here. I think we should all remove and discard our splash guards... pass it on everyone. Let's make next Friday, May 9, 2008, No More Mudflaps Day!!
Notwithstanding the fact that the channeling of water away from our tires is dangerously inhibited by the presence of these insidious little devices, I am absolutely certain that upon reaching a speed of 326.27 mph these mechanisms of mass destruction will most assuredly cause our vehicles to take flight.
Pass it on everyone. Pass it on.
Where the hell is Ralph Nader when you really need him?
Mr. Maximany, sir... you need to stop talking out your butt. Your breath is offensive.
