Take it for a rip on the highway and around the city for a lil while. Are you familiar with driving standard?
Keep an eye out for things like:
tire condition,
brake pad wear,
play in the steering,
axle condition (any clicking when making a tight corner?),
exhaust leaks,
is the car clean/been smoked in?,
service records/maintenance,
paint condition,
oil leaks due to higher milage,
listen for misfires/coilpack issues,
listen for timing chain rattle,
check battery date,
check oil condition - smell it,
find out where the car is normally parked and look for oil/fluid spots on the ground.
find out how many owners the vehicle had,
do research on technical service bulletins/recalls,
check for a spare tire,
check if interior has water leakage stains around the headliner due to sunroof leaks,
have a mechanic check it out.
May seem like a bit overkill, but all these things are important and can possibly save you money and/or headaches down the road. I'm guessing you can buy that car off of him for $1400-ish. If I had missed any issues please chime in. Good luck bro!

I'm going to post a few things he wrote me an some emails about the i30t.
"it is exactly a maxima. every part is interchangable. its just the luxury version of a maxima. look into getting an engine from a totaled maxima (car-part.com) you can find with them with 60k or less for like 800 dollars. might cost 1500 for a swap professionally. thats the way to make sure this car runs for another ten years for only twenty five hundred tops. really i have had minor problems with it, nothin big. like i said, the alternator and battery were just replaced, along with the axels and the breaks were done about 10k ago. its your call. its definately the nicest car you could purchase for anywhere near 2 grand. just needs an exhaust, the intake manifold leak has been there for the last 50k since ive owned the car, it doesnt cause problems to be worth fixing, and trust me ive looked into it. both power seats work, and they are heated, it is a Bose system which if you look up you will see is one of the best. and it works great. power mirrors windows and door locks all work along with remote lock, alarm and trunk pop. if i didnt have to sell it i would have been asking closer to the list price on nada.com and kbb.com but i have another car i am investing into and need the money. just let me know if 1800 will be do-able. hopefully i can take more pictures today. jus waitin on my girl to bring her camera by. or we could link up around 4 if you'd like to look at the car. i checked with meineke and the had an exhaist sale going on, complete stock exhaust from the cat-back for like 350."
". its not the easiest manual transmission to drive, but once you get the hang of it its good."
-what is wrong with the car-"nah just the intake manifold gasket and exhaust."

hmmmm.....well, a leaky intake manifold, im sure, can lead to bigger problems later....
---i wouldnt want to buy a car Id have to immediately work on!
-- no exhaust? ----id tell him i wasnt interested unless he got the exhaust on there
-- kbb says roughly $3600 blue book BUT, in a years time, what's it going to be? The car, mine as well, is at the point where value is just going to drop...and fast. I remember buying mine when blue book value was 12000.
If it were me, I think i'd pay as much as 1,200 for the car with no exhaust.--1400 maybe with exhaust. (Buying an older car like this, you're buying all the trouble, parts, and repairs to go along with it).
Overall, I'd say it's fine if you want a project....otherwise, I'd want to buy on with lower miles on it. If money is tight, maybe go up to 7/8 grand and sell within a year.
I think I'd really just have trouble buying a car with 200000 miles on it. What you might check into, is buying a car that has just over 100000 miles on it. It seems a big selling point, back when i was searching, was "THIS CAR HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT!" ...of course it was at 96,000, but there seemed to be a big price difference between a 96k mile and 100k miles car.....and only a 4k mile difference? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Yea, he said that the exhaust could use a patch. I have to explain my situation so that you guys could put urselves in my shoes for a bit. My parents gave me a 1995 honda accord EX VTEC Sedan with 200000 miles on it. It was completly f**ked up and i had to try and restore it to have some value. I had to work to fix the seals that cost me $500, new tires, and a bunch of hard labor. First let me tell you about the accords condition.
-Driver windows keeps going out of track no matter what i do
-passenger window doesn't go up or down
-no A/C
-no radio
-leather seats have rips and tears
-automatic transmission does this wierd thing when it shifts gears and when i go from park to any gear. well i slide the stick from park to drive and 1 or 2 seconds pass, then the gear changes. is there a technical word for this, if so tell me.
Well his i30t has a/c and everything works on his car. i think his car is worth more than mine. i'm not trying to get over on him, i just want a car that can work with me.
oh yea, and hondas are starting to annoy me(everyone has them). i don't see any i30's at all

Even if you get it for $1500-1600 its still a deal because in the end you could have a 1999 Infiniti I35 with a swapped 3.5 in great running condition for around $3000 and thats not a bad bargain if you ask me. And besides, the 200k motor is still running so you got time to beat on that one for a while too.
hey man when it comes to buying a used vehicle there is a lot of room for haggling...its not even lowballing but instead (in microeconomics its called pareto optimality) meeting at a point where there is no way to have a better option for one side without harming the other..there is one price usually lower than asking price when it comes to used vehicles that you guys agree on and any movement from that will either harm you or him...all im saying is when it comes to selling used cars especially that its high mileage an average joe schmoe will not consider that..so demand automatically goes down with demand down the seller is willing and able to sell at much lower price (demand is a price determinant take notes here guys lol)...i say go buy it since from waging your options going with the i30 is maximizing returns(since it has ac lol)...an engine swap is verrrrrrry easy...one weekend maybe...some even do it in one day...
ps..gas prices are really high not because of opec or middle east..but mostly because of us coz we demand so high this leads to more production of oil and supply goes up..then supply and demand meets at a higher price equilibrium...thus higher prices..
sorry to make this really technical....but i just had economics and im a business finance major...lol...in short im a nerd who will bank in the future...

Well, thanks alot for the replies guys, and i will take all into consideration. also, wouldn't i be getting a deal if i buy it b/c it has a/c and radio and hopefully not too many major problems. my honda has also 200,000 miles and it has nothing, no a/c or radio and passenger window doesn't go up or down. I will talk to the owner.
also what engine would i swap it with that is 3.5

Go for 1000 max. Don't forget your buying a car that you know needs work. Like ONO said if you have a car you ask for a lower price. You do not NEED a car you WANT a nicer car than you have. so why not use the fact that a car is not an immediate need as a bargaining tool.
If you didn't buy the car already
If you didn't buy the car already
If someone has or had a 1999 i30t can you please tell me what good features it has that you liked and what i can do with it such as modding. i know somewhat about the engine swap. i just want to know if the car is worth buying.
00VI stands for the Variable Intake Manifold that was first introduced on the 2000 Maxima.
