Motor or engine question

I am the guy that will soon by an all black i30t 1999 5sp. The car has 200000 miles on it and i need to swap it to have lower miles. I needed to know whats the difference between a motor and an engine. there is a guy selling a maxima motor for my year with only 92000 miles. will this help me with miles. is this good for the price of $700.

difference--nil in this case--engine & motor can be interchanged in describing the powerplant for a car.
92k is lower than 200k but the price is so-so for the miles-shop around before you buy

go to car-part.com and look for one. 700 dollars imo is way to much for a vq unless it has 30k on it. i got my engine for 250 off that site w/ 140k. the reason why i didnt have a problem with buying a engine for that much cause it was a dek engine.

but 200 dollars for a 5 speed on the other hand is a great deal. i would not pass that up

and also 01-02 engines are totally diffrent from each other. 01= vq30dek and 02= vq35de. both will fit in a i30 but with some modification. of course the vq35 would require alot more modification vs the dek

Whats wrong with the current motor that has you thinking you should swap it? These cars are proven to go well beyond 200k with no problems as long as it's maintained. I don't see why it's worth fixing a problem if you don't have one.

^^^ur right. probably nothing is wrong with it. i guess i was just looking ahead. because he is selling me a 1999 i30t 5sp for $1700, i was just thinking, he's held it for me for two weeks. i need to see it, i don't know why for that price he hasn't sold it yet. it has 200,000 miles on it and the muffler has a leak, also the intake manifold gasket needs to be replaced.

IMO get the car...fix what needs to be fixed on it. maximase86 is right about the motor, the VQ's are beast....i have a friend who just finally installed a SC on his and the motor has well over 210k on it and still pulling strong.

do what i did get the spare motor and keep it as that a spare motor....you can either decide to work on the motor just incase something does happen or you can just have a spare motor lying around for a rainy day.

the VQ35 would be pretty nice in a i30 imo

Another Question about the vq motors. on a vid i saw some kid write vq>vtec. is vq something like vtec or is it just the first two letters of the maxima and i30 engines.

yes vq is the first two letters of the engine code.

as for what the guys wrote in the above posts. these vq's are pretty much bullet proof. ive done t hings to them that would normally make a engine brake down but my vq just keeps going. im at about 160k and havent felt more confident in it. i feel more convfident in more so now then when i had 80k on her.

oh and +1 on getting a spare motor especially if its a 00-01

yes they do but it is not a easy swap. there is rewiring of engine harness, cam spacers, diffrent timing chain cover, modifying the throttle body im sure there is alot more but i am deffently inexprienced in the 3.5 swap and im just giving you info off the top of my head. if you want more info go to the all motor secton and look in the stickies

here is a dumb question. Why are you swapping at all? only because of the 200K? I have driven maximas with around 200k that pulled like new. just because a motor only has 90k miles on it doesnt mean its not beat to all hell. And.........you have to figure that there is a reason the motor is no longer in the car. Dont take care of the rest of the car, what makes you think they took care of the motor?

nah, i'm not replacing the motor. i'm going to buy an i30t in a week and i'm just lookin around before i buy it just to see how much i would have to spend for a motor swap, because i am low on cash. hopefully his engine and tranny are perfect. i'm skeptical about his car because he is selling me an 99 i30t for 1700 with just a leak in the muffler and it needs a new intake manifold gasket. so i'm guessing there is something wrong with the motor.

im sure he is selling it cause 200k miles doesnt sound really apealing to someone who is in the market to buy a car. plus there is some work to be done. so 1700 is quite resonable. what is the blue book value on one with that kind of mileage $2500?

also does it need lower intake gaskets or upper intake gaskets? or both??
