Funky Transmission
Funky Transmission
Well my transmission is acting wacky. Before I get into details I have a side note that may help. The max would act funny mostly in a drive thru(banks, fast food, car wash) the car would drop out in D and act like it in was N when in D. So i would put it in N for a 10 seconds and put back in D which would bring the power back to D, if i would shift to R it would act like N also at this time. So i go to start it on friday and she wouldn't move in any gear no power to the wheels. She idle fine. I heard no sounds, drove it that morning and had her pulling like a champ. I put front end of car up. It does not have any real power in any gear. R doesn't put any power down. N puts wheels foward. D will move but no real power. 2 spins the tires. 1 puts down no power down. It does make kinda of a funky whine sound when rev higher in the gear, nothing too loud but not what she should be making. To me it seems like a electrical issue. I have not dropped pan but had no slipping in any gear. I'm thinking its the valve pack, transmission computer or inhibitor switch. Just wanted to see if anyone has some ideas, i know the work is all on me. I have all the parts i would need(had an I30 i parted out).
sounds like either a torque convertor problem, or trany fluid flush time. my guess is torque convertor .... since it would loose it's centrifical force by setting still - low rpm's.
Check the fluid, the trans is likely shot. If it's not putting down power in gear, then it's either not applying the gear, or it's slipped to all hell and the clutches are fried.
If first doesn't work at all, but higher gears do, then it could just be the low clutch. If it upshifts to 2nd and spins the tires just fine, then it should do the same in drive...unless it's shifting out of second into 3rd or OD. Quick skim of the FSM shows nothing in 3rd or 4th that would cause slippage that wouldn't also apply to 2nd.
Oblig:

In D you get no power, i can get to 5mph. IF I step on the gas there is no added power, the engine will rev but nothing happens. There is no shifting up or down and no real power being put down. When i say D,2,1 those are the gear selections on the stick. But it drove just fine that morning and when i go back out it acts like this. I would expect it to slowly break down or have symptoms before it got this bad. I guess i might have broke the TC bolts off, im just gonna drop it off and see what it looks like. Fuild is fine, I check it all the time
sounds like your 1st gear is gone mate .... it can happen all at once or with little symptoms I guess ... but normally it acts up for a few days. slips ... spins ... some noise.
i have the time, can get the money, but i want to know if it is practical. i think that the variable is better than manual because the constant revving of the manual kills my gas, i want to have the option of manual mode

Welcome to the forums mate! It can be done ... but you really think you can save that much gas by doing this? Enough to make it worth it (it's not gonna be cheap or easy)? As Pmohr said ... you need ALL the parts so if you're gonna do this, start making a list I guess. Just drive your auto like a stick .... it'll never be the same, but you get my point.
