280 miles on a tank
I just put in the lucus fuel injector cleaner when I filled up today. I've been getting about 250-300 miles on a tank (I refuel when it hits 1/4th a tank). I'll try to let you know if I notice any improvements, but I'm also trying to lighten up my foot a bit.
Here is a quick break down for you...
Driving Style:
Frequent 0-45 or so hard pulls from a light and 10mph over on all major highways. I definitely do not drive like a grand ma. My average peak RPM is about 3k on shifts.
BEFORE:
* Castrol GTX 5w-30 Motor Oil
* Nissan Oil Filter
* Nissan and for a little while K&N air filter
* IACV, TB cleaned regularly
* ATF never changed
* Coolant never changed
* Tire pressure 32psi
* 16" SE Rims
* Stock Exhaust
* No Fuel System Cleaner
* 93 Octane Fuel
* NGK Spark Plugs
Result: 270-280 miles per tank. I usually fill up between 15-16 gallons. So if you do the math, this equals roughly 17.5 mpg.
AFTER:
* AMSOIL 5w-30 Motor Oil
* Nissan Oil Filter
* Nissan Air Filter ONLY
* IACV, TB cleaned regularly/PCV Valve changed every 12k miles
* AMSOIL ATF
* Toyota OEM Coolant
* Tire pressure 32psi
* 16" SE Rims
* Custom Exhaust: SS AutoChrome Headers, Fed. Spec Y-Pipe, Magnaflow High-Flow Cat, Budget B-Pipe, OEM 4th Gen Muffler
* Chevron Techron 12gallon Fuel System Cleaner
* 93 Octane Fuel
* NGK Spark Plugs
Result: 320-330 miles per tank. I usually fill up between 15-16 gallons. So if you do the math, this equals roughly 20.6 mpg.
Make it as easy as possible for your car to work, and you'll see the improvements. I hear a hiss/raspiness from the front of my car when I accelerate but I've been reading that this is just a result of the headers. So even if I had an exhaust leak, I'm getting decent mileage. I am considering going down to 89 fuel this summer to see if I feel any difference in my car. But being the way I am, I probably won't. I baby my car regardless of how much it costs me. I am also considering the spacer kit...but I really don't feel comfortable drilling my EGR. That gave me the biggest issue when doing my headers and I want to avoid the EGR as much as possible. I think if I did that I'd be able to hit 350 miles with ease.
Also...I normally see this kind of mileage/quarter:
* Fill up 15-16 gallons
* Drive a total of 110 miles as I hit the 3/4 Full Mark
* Drive a total of 220 miles as I hit the 1/2 Full Mark
* Drive a total of 290 miles as I hit the 1/4 Full Mark
* Drive a total of 330 miles as I approach E but not on E yet (I never want to get stuck somewhere do to where I live so I never go past E).
I have seen my gas light flicker at around 340-350 miles on the tank.

and yea your mileage is almost identical to mine. 110 @ the 1/4, 220 @ the half, etc.
What do you mean what's up with it? If your coolant sucks and is degraded, you run the risk of running a hotter engine which is bad for performance and probably mileage.
i get 350-380 with aspirated driving...
i tired driving 60/65 to see if it improves NOPE!!!
so im back to drivng 70/80 mph i get same miles on tank.
one thing i noticed the more times i start my car the incresily noticeable differicne in my MPG it seems when i start the car like 1-2 gallons seem to disappear...

I get around 350 for strict city driving.. and get this... i fill up with unleaded regular... it does the job perfectly at a fraction of the cost... go to consumer reports, they have a really good article on it
280 is probably right about average. I get ~300 a tank mostly around town with a dead O2 sensor and no EGR
At one point when the car was stock I was able to get 520 miles out of a tank
I'm pretty sure I ran the tank dry on that run, which may not have been such a great idea.

I only use Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaners, don't really trust anything else. I heard mixed reviews about the Chevron one, don't know about the B-12 but no one has issues with Lucas. I would get the big bottle of Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner and Fuel treatment, it will last you at least a year if not more depending on how often you use it.

About 7 months or so, when i bought my car, i drove over 1000 miles on highway to drive it back home. It was showing me 32-35 mpg on the dash (i know it probably wasnt doing what it showed)
Since past winter, it has been running really rich in gas....i could smell it when starting cold in new england weather. So, i was told to change upstream o2 sensors, i did. Still no luck. I am still getting around avg 300 miles a tank, with mostly highway (70% or more) and rest city driving. I have tried all this without AC on, and even not exceeding RPMS above 3000.
I had a check engine light for cylinder misfire on cylinder 2. Im thinking coil packs. Would spark plugs and coil packs do the trick ???
Oh btw, now my display on dash shows around 14mpg - 19mpg.... Sometimes on highway it has shown 23mpg recently. Within past 4 months or so, it has gone as low as 8 mpg. During winter, especially when starting in the cold, initial driving would show around 7 MPG on old o2 sensors. But with new o2 sensors, its still hovering around the same.....
Thanks

B. I would have that cylinder 2 misfire taken care of ASAP. That is what is most likely causing the low mileage and the fuel smell...It is unburnt gas being left in the cylinder and being forced out the exhaust.
my apologies. its 3Am, and thats why I have somehow ended up on 4th gen forum with 5.5 gen question. Nonetheless, any feedback is appreciated.
Anyone have any possible ideas of a cylinder misfire cause (other than possible coil pack) Thanks

Oh and its cool....mistakes happen....
LOL J/K
If it helps my personal best is a little over a tank for a just under 600 mile trip from Knoxville Tn to Cape Hatteras i think it was 590 ish miles
By barely over 1 tank what i mean is my gas guage was still on full after i filled back up when i got to my destination in Hatteras..less then 1 mile from the lighthouse.
And no i rode no ferrys...went from the south end of the ferry routes and even drove up the coast.
This was driving 80mph+ with me and the little woman.

BG44k FTW. I get about 300 miles per tank with 80% highway, 20% city, 97 GLE, 210k, auto, no less than 91 octane, with 70lbs of speaker box and 12s in the trunk at all times.

If anyone has noticed a drop in mpg look at the pumps next time you fill up. Im not sure about everywhere else but here in florida they have started adding "up to 10 percent ethanol" which from what ive heard is right at about 10 percent. Ethanol is and alcohol which burns twice as fast as gasoline. So we are paying more for gas and getting worse mpg all around.
Ive got a Bad 02 Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 1 (Upstream) and im still pulling 280 a tank easy. i seriously thought 20 MPG was BAD until now, but hey then you guys came along and i feel a whole lot better about her
oh, and you guys mentioned Lucas, I typically like to run some Seafoam down the vaccum line into the IM every 6 months or so too keep things clean. works pretty god so far. but a warning when running that kinda thing down the vaccum line, it can screw up 02 Sensor's as well as heat the engine temp up quite signifigantly.. i would honestly let the car sit after i foamed her for almost overnight and she'd still be pretty darn warm come morning.

u 4th genner are lucky. my 2k i30 get ab8 200 or maybe a 218miles a tank if im lucky. i drive 99% city and shift below 2.5k rpms. always baby it. im jealous of u guys but i try not to think ab8 my gas mileage bcus it just gives me a headache.
I got 460 miles out of a tank a few weeks back driving 75mph on the freeway with the air on with maybe 100 of those miles in town driving.
My mom's 2000 I30 once got 32mpg on a 90 mile trip, I think the average speed was maybe 65mph or so, but it usually gets 28 on the freeway, not much different than my 96 5-speed....

Wow.. how come you guys are getting that kind of mileage???
I changed my knock sensor, spark plugs, O2 sensors, got rid of the black air box, and hacked a cone air filter on there, new tires, from the cat on back, str8 pipe. no resonator, and a 3A Racing exhaust... nothing performance wise.. and i fill my car like half a tank and i test drive it for like 30 minutes to walmart and back, and that includes driving like GRANDMA, but when i get back which is like an hour later... the indicator goes from half way mark to the other mark before empty... what is going on??
I drive a 96 Automatic. o_O
help would be appreciated. thanks.

I got about 21 mpg with my stock 97 SE with about 60-70% city driving and being more on the aggressive side with the throttle. I recently installed a short-ram (not cold air) intake and I'm getting about 26mpg.
Also been told that the stock computer doesn't read octane levels above 89 or maybe 90, so premium with that 92 or 93 octane (if what i was told is true) is just being treated like plus or midgrade fuel... which equals wasted cash. like i said i do not have proof of that but you may want to look into it... anyone else heard such a rumor?
