best way to red/clear tails, AE heads

what is the best/easiest way to clear out my yellow lens on my tail lights? i have seen a couple ways to do it, but they all seem like they're taking unnecessary steps. a few questions regarding the tails:

1. what temp. to bake them apart in the oven? how long?
2. do i really need the clear acrylic piece? what happens if i just take the yellow out and leave it like that?

same thing with the AE heads. what temp, how long? does it have to be wheel paint?

EDIT: white 97 SE

A simple "flat black for plastic" paint will work fine in the headlights. As for the tails, if you leave the orange out, it'll look strange because there is no silver reflector behind it...its more like a dull gray. It'll look unfinished IMO without the clear lens.

Use Flourescent lighting cover at home depot (hint: use a dremel to cut the shape out)

yea 200-220 is about right.

i wouldnt just leave it in there for 15 mins tho. you shoudl stand by the oven and keep trying to loosen the housing. one of my taillights took about 15 mins and the other was ready to be opened in under 5.

when you open them up, DO NOT GET THAT BLACK GLUE ON ANYTHING. it is ****ing impossible to get off stuff like clothing, shoes, plastic. you especially dont want any of that getting on the outer lens.

yea, you will see what ^hes talking about once you remove the inserts. it will be mostly clear plastic, meaning you can see the ugly aluminum and light bulb.

this stuff is IMPOSSIBLE to work with. incredibly brittle.

if i had to do it again, i would search out some kind of other material. dont ask me what, becuase i dont know, but that plastic is a PITA and doesnt look as good as it should.

but if you do insist on using it....

do not try to use a blade or razor or anything, becuase it just will not work.
i litterally went through 25 sq. feet of this stuff before getting the right shape.

use a dremmel and a SMALL sanding wheel - to melt and shape the plastic.

Dude, it's not that hard. It took me a total of 10min total cutting time. Trace out the correct shape on paper, then tape the paper to the lighting cover, and use a dremel with a cutting wheel. Easy as pie. Also, use googles, trust me, zey do sumzing.

I also tried the razor, but it was waaaay too inaccurate and on top of it, it didn't cut very deep. And unless you're going to get actual lense material, the flourescent lighting cover is the way to go. If it doesn't match that well, just tint it slightly.

took me about 5 hours, including the trip to home depot to buy a dremmel.

i started with a razor, then gave up on that and tried a serated blade, then gave up on that and tried a mini-sawzall. finally i dropped 40bux for a rotary tool.

YES, in case you were wondering, that IS how much i paid for four 2x2 acrylic squares.

they were regular price $2.97, so i picked up one hoping for the best (little to no screwups), and it rang up $0.01. i asked the cashier nicely if i could go get a couple more at that price, and she said they were trying to get rid of them. apparently they changed vendors for their 2x2 fluorescent lighting covers (lawlz), and when they change vendors, all of their old vendors' items drop to $0.01, as to get rid of them. she said they were supposed to pull them off the shelf and send them back, but since i got my hands on them, they can't legally tell me to put them back. so i went back and got 4 of them.

i have no idea what i'm going to do with 8 square feet of acrylic lenses!!! i only need like 48 square inches!!! loolllloooollllll

PWN3D!!!

FTMFW!!!

EDIT: i finished the AE mod, and painted the black circle on the grille (behind where the burger lies) white to match my car. i will post pics when i finish the red/clear and painted badge...

You will love that dremel until the day you (or it) die. Possibly from using the dremel improperly. One of the best tools I own.

Do 2 more sets of taillights?

I'm actually in the final stages of making my own 95-96 red clears at the moment. We'll see how they turn out.
