Head cracked??

hey guys...

ok i'm a little nervous at the moment. last night i finished taking apart the engine for my 00vi swap. i took the LIM off and looked in the intake ports on the head. 2 of the intake ports had coolant on 1 of the valves. the right one to be specific. This is the rear bank also. There wasn't a lot of coolant but it was obvious that it was coolant.

so what i'm wondering is how in the world did coolant get ON TOP of the valve.... do you think the head is cracked? i've never overheated or noticed coolant leaking....is it possible for coolant to some how get into the intake while undoing any coolant lines or anything? the port by the EGR looked wet but i didn't know if it was coolant or not...

again i've never had a problem with driveability or anything....

Have you noticed the coolant level dropping when using the car normally? Had to top up the coolant level more frequently then usual? I am using my car in temperatures averaging 34C which is pretty warm and I only need to add coolant every few weeks, what has your coolant consumption looked like?
I'd need a drawing of the head internals to say where the coolant came from.

well my coolant has stayed the same since i've had the car. i've had it now for a year and a half and i've never put coolant in it. never. and its filled up becuase i've checked it.

well i know coolant runs through the throttle body and in the rear by the EGR...but i'm confused how coolant would get ON TOP of the intake valve....

maybe just coincidental? 4 of the cylinders looked great....but two beside eachother had a little coolant....

this sounds like the logical answer. when you removed the intake coolant dripped in the intake port.to support this you said the coolant level never went down ,and trust me, if your car was burning coolant ,you would be aware of it

Not to scare you but i just removed my dek LIM to get it cleaned and remove the swirl valves(i was to lazy to remove the while i was doing the swap) and i didnt notice any signs of coolant, but i could just be coincidental

Coolant runs through the intake manifold? That might explain why the intake is so hot on these cars....

one more thing ,almost every time I have seen a head crack so that it leaks coolant, its always in the combustion chamber part of the head.

...actually i will commit to saying "everytime", that is the case.

Through the throttle body (like most other cars) and around the EGR port on the back.

yeah i was thinking about trying to get all the lines hooked up then putting pressure to the system and seeing if coolant leaks anywhere.....i'm just hoping it "somehow"...haha....got there because i haven't noticed any signs of cracked head or anything....

Frankly, if coolant was getting into one or more cylinders you would probably be experiencing the nasty signs of fluid lock. (Water cannot be compressed). When coolant gets into a cylinder, usually you find that when the engine cools down, coolant gets in, then when you try to start it, it seems like the battery is flat because the engine resists turning over (because one or more pistons are trying to compress the unwanted fluid in the cylinder).
