I get around 23-24 mpg with mixed during the week with work and running around. I have a full DEK motor with larger injectors which may hurt my mpg, with no egr. For people with 31, its based on highway the whole time. These are road trips where you never get off the highway and with egr and evap working right. I would love to run a full highway trip.

My Maxima is a 1999 Auto with 160k miles on it. I live in northwest FL and I get about 19 to 21 MPG CITY ONLY depending on how I drive the car. I just replaced the knock sensor, have had coils replaced and dropped a K & N Air Filter in my car. Of course, I know how to drive "conservatively."

Hi!

I'm new to this forum but I guess I have to start somewhere. I bought my Maxima QX V6 24V (2.0) -95 automatic for less than a year ago. I was 23 then. Very happy that I managed that long without a car, as having one is unevitably expensive.
When I bought the car some people disscouraged me from getting a car with a "big engine", jesus christ, well I guess it depends on what you compare with.
I did not want a 1.3 corolla or such and I love cars like camry and maxima.
Anyway the 3.0 litre ones are very little worh in Finland. You can even get a 4th gen in reasonable condition for 3000€, I guess less than 5000$ and the 2.0 litre almost doubles the price. But we have our gas prices

Anyway I'm relatively happy with my mileage of about 6.9l/100km should be 34MPG (hate that unit) if I don't drive in town. Worst MPG has been 10.2l/100km = 23MPG when driving alot in town during the winter. Best calculated MPG has been 6.3l/100km, 37MPG, but the tank is cheating. It will often not fill completely depending on if the car slightly leaning. I have figured 6.3l is BS and 6.9l is true.
I wish I would have found one with manual transmission as it would increase FE even if the automatic has the torque converter lock. Maximas mostly have automatic transmissions even in finland where 90% of the cars are manuals.
I have not done any neutral coasting but have read that it is fine with the tranny so I guess I will try.

Mileage was 217000 km when I bought it and now 241000, you do the math

Besides normal maintenance I have done some interior and instrument light modifications as well as fixed the problems with cold solder joints in the tachometer and cruise controller. If somebody wants to discus these with me, feel free.

One problem I still need to fix is the seat heating which only works on the pasenger back side. I'm also thinking about replacing the stock air filter to possibly gain 2hp, if it is possible The original intake with the poormans supercharger might already add a few hp at highway speeds.

Anyway I will try to find the correct threads for these issues.
Great car is what I was supposed to say "I aggree" to!

Hello everyone, Just got back from the cottage got to give it a real MPG test. Filled her up with Sunoco 94 Ultra before I left and filled it when I got back to see what kind of numbers I could get. Here are the stats:
97 Maxima SE 5Speed 380,xxxkm
Stillen Intake, Full Custom Exhaust

Distance traveled 365km
Avg. Speed 91.2 Km/h (Verified by GPS)
Liters used 28.2L
AC on 20% of the time
Tried to keep the RPM'S under 3k
= 7.7l/100KM OR 30.5 MPG

Couldent believe it really but I think 94 makes the difference. needless to say I am happy with my Maxis fuel economy!

The best I've ever gotten was this weekend - 27.5 or so - 97 GLE 4AT, 155k miles, stock wheels/tires, always running premium fuel, AC always on, knock sensor resistor bypass, running Mobil 1 10W30, OEM plugs, K&N drop-in filter. For those of you getting >30mpg could you answer the following?

Is this w/ AC on the whole time?
Is this using premium or regular fuel?
Is this with standard tire pressure?

I have a 97 GLE AT with 195k miles. The best I ever got was 22mpg mostly highway at about 70mph with cruise control and no ac (windows closed on highway).

Tire pressure 33psi; new knock sensor, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, oil, suspension, O2 sensors, clean egr tube and throttle body.

I get almost the same mpg filling 87 and premium (10% ethanol)
I'm the only one in the car and the trunk is empty.
Calipers are ok.

I tried to use fuel injector cleaners such as Lucas and Shevron Techtron with no significant results in mpg.

I don't know how you guys get 30+ mpg; I use castrol GTX 5w30 and NGK plugs and average at about 20mpg in CT (shifting mostly at 2000-2500 rpm).

I think (someone correct me if I am wrong) you get the most accurate MPG if you calculate it when you are almost empty. I filled up at half a tank once and got over 30 MPG but when I run it till the light comes on I get 26-28 though it has been going down recently because of my bad knock sensor.

I just went on a trip this week end. one tank there, one tank back. I got 28 mpg the way there, 32 back. Avg- 30mpg

Car is a 95se 5spd with 160,000 miles with 4 people and a full trunk ususally driving at about 70mph.
I do have a CAI and y-pipe.

Don't question my calculations. I know how to divide.

This obviously is possible. There are too many factors at stake to rule it out. Temperature can make a big difference and here it was pretty close to ideal (around 70).

i have a 98 max with now 193,XXX miles warpspeed y-pipe, high-flow cat, and custom catback gets 36mpg with cruise control set to 75mph on my trip home down the nj turnpike from college in nnj, and today I got 32mpg with curise control set at about 80 the whole trip down! but with out cruise control and only my (lead) foot i average about 20 ish mpg in mixed driving... I'm starting to wonder if the lack in back pressure is what kills my city/ mixed driving....???? BTW: the numbers above reflect BP 91/93 octane gas...

First, 36 mpg I think you calculated wrong. 32 is more believable, but still high.

Second, backpressure is never good, it won't help your city driving. Lead foot + old V6 + ~3200lb car = crappy city gas mileage.

You don't get that kind of mileage. You guys are nuts if you think you do.

Put a good GPS in the car and see how far your speedo is off.

The reason people think their car gets better mileage than new is simply, it's old, the calibrations for the ODO and Fuel are off.

My speedo is off a bit by 2-3mph. When going 70, the gps shows 68 mph.
I checked the gps on my wifes' 06 corolla and it's precise.

I didn't compare the ODO with the distance meter in gps yet, but it seems like it's somewhat the same. Not sure how precisely the gps shows the distance of the planned trip.

Dude, it's possible, and has been proven by many on here. IF you keep your speed below 70 and don't drive like a maniac, it is easily achievable.

WOW, that is great. My car has about 130k on the clock and I drive all highway to and from work. I get 25 mpg's and that is awesome for a V6 automatic. I can go a whole 350 miles on the clock before even going to fill-up and when i fill-up there is always atleast 5 gallons still in there. 4th Gens are awesome.

Some of you guys have great running cars with great gas mileage and I believe it. However, I can't seem to figure out why my car only gets 325 miles on a full tank in city and hwy (70-75). I think this fill up I can get nearly 350 - 375 if I really try. Could it be the gas? I filled up with Mobil 93 so maybe its gas is better than Sunoco.

I do 93 as well, and usually get 20-22 city (less if I'm in a lot of traffic) and 23-24 on the highway doing around 70-75. I'm sure I could use a tune up, but....I don't see it improving THAT much.

75 mph shouldn't get you good mileage..

Shell V power has the best additives for good fuel economy as far as I'm concerned.

I hear ethanol burns faster then petrol bassed gasoline... in the case of pure E85 130% faster... Vpower has no ethanol.

I don't run sunoco (ultra 94 here in canada) in the winter because it gives me **** economy and I had problems with water in my snowblower freezing in the fuel lines... appearently ethanol reacts with water vapour... that risk and **** fuel economy when I cant drive fast anyway = not worth the premium... so I buy shell vpower.

Soo many people think ethanol is horrible... and sadly I am starting to believe them... http://www.counterbias.com/875.html = compelling breakdown

Running with a resistor where my knock sensor should be and v-power never gave me no issues or knock, so the 94 was just a waste anyway... the ECU couldnt further advance the timing and I couldnt get enough compression to cause detonation. My only real "performance mods" were the go-fast holes that would happen in my exhaust.

Shell stations around NY and CT use ethanol. There is a sticker "10% ethanol" at every station I visited so far.

Sometimes I fill up with V-Power 93 and it gives me about 10-15 more miles per tank compared to other 93 gas.

Hey, Kitchener, never see anyone that close on the ORG!

Anyways, I'm not saying to anyone that it's impossible to get mileage up to 28ish on these cars, but to try and tell me you're getting 36.... no, you're just not. Even 32 is REALLY pushing the envelope, it's not realistic.

I get 30mpg highway rather regularly, got 33mpg once back when my car was an auto. If my maintenance deprived POS can make those numbers...

^maybe I'm just being a sceptic, I dunno. I don't see it being viable to acheive that type of mileage out of a car that got 19-24 MPG under ideal conditions when it was new. I would be much more likely to suspect malfuntioning speed sensors, etc. that would cause such a reading.

But what do I know, if you guys are getting that great of fuel mileage, I'll just shuttup and be insanely envious haha.

Here in Ontario the shell pumps advertise 10/5/0% ethanol on the gas, 0% being in the V-power.

I get about 250-300 miles to a tank. All city, daily commute to work. That's good enough for me comparing to a stalled z28 that only gave me 150 miles to a tank after I put the stall in.

I would of got 400 miles to the tank yesterday, but I filled up just to be save as 325 was my highest. When I filled up I had about 370 miles and half of 1/4 of a tank left. When I fill up today and get about 16 gallons my average should be around 23. Bummer lol. I'll update later.

Over the summer i put in NGK Iridium IX plugs, strange thing is 4 of the plugs i replaced were NGK platinum.... and the other 2 were regular Champion plugs.... I wonder who/ why the **** someone would only replace 2 plugs with ****ty Champions.

If it makes any difference modded my stock airbox.... i unbolted the top of it from the Mass air flow sensor and got some cheap universal adapter from a car shop and had attached a cone filter to it.... sounds bad *** and mabe changes the air / fuel ratio a bit..... its the same **** as a short ram intake that some guys are paying $100+ for but only costs 30-40 bucks if u go to an auto parts store and make one urself...

As of tire pressure... probably around 30 unless some air has leaked out from the last time i checked..... but i think that accelerating slowly to 70 or w/e then just leting Cruise control is what makes 30+ highway mpg possible, the way i normaly drive i would say that thats impossible also but just try it. Fill up take a trip on the highway for like 80 or so miles with cruise control then fill up again and see for yourself....

"under ideal conditions when it was new" did it have a have a warpspeed y-pipe which removed both precats.... a high flow cat...... the bend after the cat cut off.... and a full 2 and a quarter custom catback with out the squished bend nissan put in the original b-pipe to have a bracket hold it in.... and a knock off flow master along with a home made short ram intake and almost 200K miles of being broken in do tend to change "under ideal conditions when it was new" numbers....

and for a malfunctioning speed sensor.. my drive is about 82 straight highway miles (garden state parkway to nj turnpkie to 295) and take about an hour and a half or so if u do the math its about the same thing mabe off by a few mph and using a gps isnt ****.... how many times is it off by where things actualy are on the map they show and what you really see....
well my motor and / or tranny mounts feel like they are gone...... and mabe all of that duct tape on the drivers side / bumper makes my car more airodynamic lol so thay mabe has some effect on the numbers to lol...
but thats just my two cents

You can't compare an absolute position via GPS (which has a **** resolution for most consumer grade devices, it's not going to be exact) and a GPS indicated speed.

Both of the 4th gen Maximas I just bought had the original factory window (MSRP) sticker still in the glove box. The 1997 GXE is rated at 21 city and 28 highway, BUT there is a big disclaimer that the majority of vehicles with these estimate will actually achieve 17-25 City and 23-33 Highway mileage.

BTW, the MSRP of the 1997 with only the GXE Security and Convenience PKG ($699), Sunroof ($899) and Floormats ($79) was $25,396. Mine was originally sold in Tallmadge, OH, had Georgia plates in the trunk, and has been in California since 2002.

I got 36MPG on a 550+ mile trip last summer, filled up after 450+ miles was at the 1/8th tank mark. The trick is to not accelerate so fast.. don't go over 2300rpms and try to stay under 2000rpms until you get up to speed. Don't drive over 65mph. Use Cruse control as much as you can.. your foot is not as sensitive as the computer control.

Hasn't anyone seen the mythbusters where he drives the minivan right behind an 18 wheeler and increases his gas mileage up to 40%? Just gotta draft and you'll easily top 30. Haha, but for real (and safety), driven right I certainly believe 30+ is achievable under OPTIMUM conditions of course. Over the summer my job was 15 miles each way, taking back roads where I would keep her in 5th gear cruising at 40-50 most of the way and I had a few fill ups that topped 28.2 MPG.

For some reason on the hwy I have a hard time staying under 75 so I never really get more than 26-27 but I'd say I consistently get 24+ on longer trips which I am happy with. I would love to see the day I can baby her enough to top 30 MPG, and this is with 155k on the clock.

We have a 97 GLE auto and a 06 Corolla 1.8 v4 auto.
I tried all those tricks on both cars including driving behind large trucks w/ cruise control on, going from CT to NY and back on both cars.

The best I got on Corolla was 30mpg highway (manufacturer claims 36mpg highway)
and Maxima 22-23 mpg highway

No codes, fresh oil, plugs , new filters, 33 psi tire pressure and much more.

Thank you for bringing up the window sticker!!!! I found this one online

23-33 mpg highway stock so add an intake, less restrictive kick off the rusted falling appart stock exhaust system and replace from headers back with less restrictive parts and then 32 even 36 seem possible. fill up tank... drive 82 miles fill up agian devided by 2.25 gallons (amount of gas used to fill the tank up again) = 36.4 = 36.4mpg
