Maximas are very reliable cars as long as you treat them well. When you got the car, you have to be careful since you do not know if any previous owner took care of the car plus any maintainence. I know it isn't fun having to take car of problems when you buy a used car, but that's the price a person pays for buying used. Take care of all of the smaller issues, and look around for quality parts at awesome prices. What is sad is when a person thinks that they need to have someone else perform simple fixes since they are "incapable" of working on their own car with the thought of messing it up. That is when they take the car in to a shop and want to give the car up since repair bills and labor are so damn high.

Just replace the knock sensor and EGR valve if you know those are problems. Just think, once you get all of the smaller problems taken car of, you won't have to worry about them for a long while.

Replace the EGR first.
a faulty EGR valve can indirectly cause detonation.

I'm at my second Nissan (96 G20/99 Maxima), I have 2 friends with 2 each (92 240sx/96 I30 and 86 300ZX/03 Maxima) and 2 others with Sentras. The only problems we all had were with sensors and/or electric/electronic parts. The engine and transmissions seems bulletproof (except the worst engine Nissan ever made - SR25DE).

well if were you i would go and get a fuel induction service first to try and clear it out...your EGR system will get some of the highly concentrated cleaner inside it and it could get her working again...just out of curiosity, what type of fuel do you run in your car?

i kind of cheated and used regular when gas prices started goin back but now went back to premium so that might have triggered the knock.
hmm yea should i just try cleanin the egr on my own and then rip my hands apart puttin in theknock lol ? dont feel like payin for labour.

yeah not good , our cars prefer the higher grade fuel and knock can creep up on ya if you arent careful..lol...eh the EGR isnt too bad...just remove the upper plenum and do it all at once..i can have that plenum off in under 30 minutes...peice of cake!!

Noob
myself - 6 maximas, 1 sentra, 1 i30
my brother - G20
my mother-in-law had a quest as well.
customers/friends cars are not included.
the timing chain motors seem fine. the transmissions are hit or miss depending on maintenance, but they are better than the honda transmissions.

Issues I have seen are : Knock Sensors, Injectors, o2 Sensors. other than that not much is really an issue.
