I live in CA I have a y-pipe and passed. you MUST drive the car for awhile to get the car warmed up for the cat to fully work.I had to take it to the freeway for a bit since I failed the first time when I just drove it around the city at first. The only time you will smell something is when you first start the car in the morning. after its warmed up then there should not be any exhaust fumes like you described.

one other thing- most smog stations will overlook this but if the guy happends to check under the car and finds that there is no pre cats then he may fail you on the visual inspection. usually they just peek under just to see if you have a cat converter but you never know

What I am gonna do is this - I have my Ypipe coming in this week and I will go get my sticker now and MA. Laws say I wont get an emissions test for another 2 years. So it will give me plenty of time. I dont know where you are but maybe you can look into that.

most shops want the person in and out, so they only look for a main cat. Most shops don't bother with the pre-cats (I haven't heard of anyone failing for not having precats). toss that sucker on and don't worry about it

most inpections are exhaust where they check cars that are fully warmed up. I few years back in Florida, there was a big sign that said for you to keep your car running while you wait. The pre-cats are only for initial startup, before the regular cat heats up. So I agree with everyone else. Go do it, it should not affect your exhaust test at all. Now, if the do a visual and they look for the pre-cats...... . Play dumb... pre-cats? what are those?
