SPEEDO HEAD

Got a couple of DTC's. p0600 and p0500. Took it in to the dealership. They told me I had a bad speedometer head (along with some other things). $519 for parts and labor. Is this reasonable?

They also told me I have to get my front axles replaced, but I can do that for alot less than $880. After hearing that quote on the axles I just wanted to see if the price on the speedometer head fix is just as absurd. It's not really something I'd want to fix myself though, I don't want to risk my instruments not working. I appreciate the feedback.

PM khantalha. I think he has a couple clusters he's trying to get rid of. It'll be way cheaper just to get a used cluster that works. But, you risk the same thing happening to old parts. Got tools? You can do the axles yourself for about $160.

That's about what I figured on the axles. I've got tools and can make that kind of repair, but I've never really messed with the instrument panel. My car failed inspection because of it and I just want to get it to pass as soon as possible. I figure the dealership is the best bet, but I still need to call around.

The spedo head is in the tranny! So ... remove the 10mm bolt holding it in, unclip it from the harnness and remove. Not worth $519 to have a stealership do it. It's litteraly a 5 min job tops. Why is your head bad? Did they tell you ... it's not a normal "wear out" part. If it's your gauges your talking about, I'd do as Jamaha says, buy a used cluster, remove and reinstall.

Raxles FTMFW !!!! Woot
Front axles are maybe a 30 min job on the pass side, 5 min on the drivers side. (if you read up first and have the tools that is!) All in all ... I'd do the job for you for a total of a C note. (both the head and the axles that is). Crazzzy how much a stealership wants these days. I guess if they offered you a loaner 07' 350z every time you took your car in, it might (and I say that with passion), MIGHT be worth it - but proably not. lol

The head is always in the cluster, within the speedo, the main component in the speedo.... Thats for any car. You are describing the VSS. A bad cluster/speedo head will trigger a VSS fault code though.

I am talking about the gear that is driven off of the differential inside the trans .... is that not the "speedo head"? Maybe I am misunderstanding ...

Either way it's not a bad idea to check the sensor/wiring harness. A new VSS is probably still cheaper than a used cluster.

yes you are. Speedo is short speedometer which is the meter part (what you see is a meter).

I bought my cluster for $50 IIRC (on the I30 a couple years back).
so pricing between the 2 is close. but I personally prefer doing "clean" dash work over greasy engine bay work.
