Blower Resistor or Blower Switch?

Recently, my A/C wont blow air. When I turn my A/C to 1, 2, and 3 settings, Air wont come out of the vents, yet I hear the A/C unit turn on. Only on setting 4 will Air come out of the vents.

Now I went to Autozone, and Advanced Auto Parts, and they did say that it could either be the Blower Resistor (like I origionally thought), or the Blower Switch. Any way to test either one, or does anyone know which one I should replace?

Thanks in advance

It is the blower resistor right on the front of the blower motor behind the glove box.

easy to fix ... shouldn't cost but maybe $15 or so. Autozone had one in stock when I had to do mine. It's maybe a 15 - 20 min job (you have to remove the glove box to get to the blower behind it as GTR said.

Thanks guys! However, it isn't a 15 dollar job. At Autozone and Avanced Auto Parts it was around 40 dollars.

Havent bought it yet though.

You don't even have to remove the glove box to get to the resistor. Just get down under there and you will see the resistor pointing down with the two screws holding it into the blower box.

Thanks, I will check again but I cannot see how I can miss it. I may have to remove the metal plate.

do you by chance have auto climate control???
if so you will not find the resistor because it isnt there.
with auto climate control the part is refered to as a "fan control amp" in the fsm.
you will have to remove the glove box for access
hope this helps

Yes I do.
Now why wouldn't the dealer know that when I gave them the VIN number since they said there was a change in the design for that year. Unless blower unit was changed afterwards. ???

I thought I was loosing it!! I was going to post pictures and ask you guys to point it out to me maybe I had a blind spot in my vision. LOL.

Blower resistor. Here the dealer wanted $60 for it, went to a junkyard, all those were screwed up too(tried about 4 of them). I ended up using one from a G20, the board design is different(also has two resistors, instead of one like my old one). It looked almost brand new, and now all 4 settings work. Cost me $5.
Heres a picture to help locating it.

Vilmaxima, that is exactly how the bottom of my blowers looks. minus the resistor.
I got the right part now and it works.

The resistor was $49 so he gave me the cheaper solution the fan control was $235.00. These are new part prices.

Thanks for the help everyone.

to answer the person who asked how much the resistor is at the dealer, it was $35 when I bought it a month or so ago.

Thx - I was just curious. I guess a part from a dealer going up from $25 to $35 in a 9 year span is reasonable.

Hey the same thing happened to my 1998 maxima and I am not sure how to change it myself as I am new at this and a girl LOL but I am willing to change my own stuff because things are expensive and I love my car. Do I need to disconnect the battery to change this part? When you buy it is there directions on how to replace or am I going in blind? LOL

no ,you dont need to disconnect the battery to change the blower resistor.
and no instructions come with it either, but it is really easy. if you look at the above picture you can see the resistor...just unplug it, remove the screws ,put in the new one and plug it back in.
its good to see people that arent affraid to work on their cars!

Turn the key to the On position, but do not turn the car on or disconnect the battery, my 98 goes off when its disconnected or dead.

My gosh, the A32 has this problem too? My 91 B13 melts the #4 pin and eats blower switchs at least every 2 years. With a new resistor. I hope I do not have to face this with the Maxima. You think Nissan would figure this problem out already.

They did. compare the new resistor to the original one. They are designed differently.

Late follow up, the fan on my auto climate control will intermittently work, but when I tap the fan, it comes on. Is this also related to the resistor? I have checked the connection and everything else works once I have tapped the fan. Thanks for the follow up.

OK, took everything apart, removed the resistor (for auto climate) and reconnected everything & fan ran correctly. Turned off A/C & turned back on & no fan. Left power on, disconnected and reconnected resistor & nothing. Tapped on fan housing & fan immediately started.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
