Problem: Fast shifts in 5spd

Once in a while when I shift too quickly into 4th or 5th gear, my car seems like it bogs a little before it engages into gear. Im just wondering if anyone else has had this or knows what the problem is.
There are no grinding noises...just a slight hesitation in rpm before it starts to rev again.

No I don't think its clutch "chadder", I've driven two Maximas (mine and my friends), and they both do it if you're really pressing the gas hard and shifting quickly. I think its just the way the transmission is, it wasn't really built for racing or anything, it has a slight pause in engagement so the shifts are smoother. But yeah, its really annoying, and I wish there was a way to get rid of it...

Huh?? When driving hard I only have trouble getting into 3rd. Shifting very fast into 4th and 5th are no problem at all for me. 1-2 shifts are fast, 2-3 shifts, small pause (possibly due to drastically different gear ratios, making the synchros work harder to keep things in synch),3-4 are fast, and 4-5 are fast.

If you don't already have it, maybe you need Red Line MT-90

I dont have trouble going into any gear...I would say I drive conservatively, but I will drive hard occasionally...I've had the car since 41k now it has 48k and I have never had that problem...

I bet you do! Try running your car like your doing the 1/4 mile, taking each gear to redline. I bet when you go from 2nd to 3rd, you can't just shove the gear lever forward. You'll feel a little more resistance than normal. This, of course, assumes you are doing whizz bang shifts, the kind that are like 2-3, not a leisurely 2 and then into 3. Know what I mean?

Other wise, when driving normally, my car has no shift problems either.

I notice a little hesitation going into 4th sometimes. It feels like I got the shift right, and it just kind of slips a little. I don't know if that's the clutch slipping, but I'm 99% sure it's not clutch chatter. There's no real "noise" when it happens, just a little hesitation.

If I understand clutch chatter correctly, it's not that. I thought clutch chatter was upon feathering the clutch normally, there's an audiable noise/kind of shaking going on with the clutch, that remains while you have the clutch slightly engaged until you feather past that "area" that it happens and fully disengage.

Even though I share both of these phenomenon, when I do the 5th-gear slip test, there's no slipping going on.

I have been to the track and have run my car hard many a time. You're most likely right, I probably jusy never noticed

If I am correct, clutch chadder does not make any noise.

props

first of all im givin u props on the black wheels, its so rare to see that on max's and that is what i was planning on doing except with thicker spokes, i think it looks swweet

next, i got a 95, and i notice that to, and it seems to happen the faster i shift actually, im good at fast(but very smoothe) shifting, but the faster i go into 5th i always get the constant lil bump, i just think since u are usually shiftin into 5th at a very crusing speed oppoosed to accelerating speed, it drops a lot quicker, like try going from 2nd to 3rd when only cruising and the tach only at 2.5-3, its gonna bump a bit, gear boxes want movement and action, so just my own bullsh%%, im an idiot, nice max

Thanks, strange choice of smiley but you must be psychic cause my birthday is next week :P

You better post some pics once you get yours done, and get them powdercoated and not painted. I just noticed today that my wheels are already chipping around the lip

Has anyone with the "bogging" bought an aftermarket clutch or other transmission upgrades and seen any improvements?

PS: Damn this busy server!

The reason you feel resistance on the 2-3 is because you're holding the shifter wrong. You should have your palm open and push up on the shifter. Don't hold the shifter like you do on the 1-2 shift.

BTW, I have no lag in any gear. I shift hard and fast, release the clutch, it goes. Many people who've riden with me think I'm powershifting.

Yeah, there is a 1/4 coil cut off each spring. They ride really nice, bumpy but not harsh at all.

I can't be sure if it is true on every max, but the 2-3 shift on my car is harder to make as, when close to redline, the clutch has to be all the way depressed before it will engage in 3rd where for most other shifts while it only has to be 3/4 of the way to the floor or when driving normally only about 1/2 way. This might be the reason why you think it is harder to do the 2-3 shift.

Last night I shifted 1-2 close to the redline and after the clutch was all the way out I noticed a good half second pause before the car started to accelerate again. My friend and I assumed that the clutch was slipping, as that's exactly what it felt like. Is it possible that this could be anything else? I really wouldnt mind not replacing my clutch yet.

Quite the opposite, actually...I recently put an ACT street clutch in at 75k miles. With my old clutch, I noticed the bogging every once in a while, but it wasn't too bad. With my new clutch, I notice it a lot more. And I think the reason is what someone mentioned previously: the transmission is not a race transmission, and I think it does this on purpose to protect itself. With my old clutch, the clutch took its sweet time engaging on harsh shifts, so I wouldn't notice the transmission being brought up to speed (hence no bogging). However, with my new clutch (which is awesome by the way), my 2-3 shifts and 3-4 shifts in particular experience a lot of bogging, because the clutch engages instantly, sending a harsher jolt to the transmission.

Even though it appears to be bogging, its still a faster engagement that previously (when I couldn't detect any real bogging). I think your clutch is probably fine, and that if anything it is your transmission (doesn't mean its broken though).

By the way, I am very happy with the ACT street clutch particularly on startup, so I know its not my clutch causing this.
