Chipmunk Attack!!
Chipmunk Attack!!
Hey,
Well this is a new issue that i have suddenly been faced with under 5 minutes ago,
I just got back from a short camping trip and opened my glove box to find torn up paper and whatever else I had in there. since my glove box is usually locked and closed I thought, crap, a mouse.
However, i went back down to the car litterally 2 minutes ago and I guess caught this rodent red handed and saw a chipmunk dart across the cabin and under the dash.
Now Im assuming i am going to have to rip my dahs aprt to get this thing out and I pray there is only one!
Some questions I have are
1. Bets method of getting rid of the chipmunk(s)
2. Where to look for damage / chipmunk droppings to clean up. etc...
3. I just installed an amp and subs and did a very neat wiring job all under carpet, under the front seats. etc... should I be worried about these being chewed through? etc...
thanks in advance and all help is welcome ASAP!!

Roll up windows, close all vents and park it in the open under hot sun and wait an hour or two. Either he:
a) runs away
b) dies
If you get option b, at least you won't have to worry about him bitting you when you disassemble your dash.

just set up a few small traps inside the car near the dash/front of the car on the inside. research real quick what chipmunks eat or stuff that they like..
you definately don't want it to die in there... then you get maggots and the like crawling around later on
good luck!

O God, this is just getting worse. lol
If it dies theres a rotting corpse. Then horrible smell for atleast a year, now maggots!!.
Ive set up a bunch of traps with peanut butter, and other sweet stuff.
its driving me nuts now, i have all my doors open, and ive been taking my dahs apart now and found nothing yet, but i dont want to jump to cunclusions that hes gone incase he ends up dying on me....

Ma dude, give your local exterminator a call... They can lure it out and spray a special chemical that will kill it, then take out dash and let homeboy take his prize with him... LOL i rather pay a few extra bucks and have a tiny chemical smell then dead rodent smell... and the more hes back there the more he's shyting... NO1 shyts on a MAXIMA lmaoo. Go for it man I wish you the best of luck.
i say put the cat in there with the doors open, the cat should stiff him out and hopefully scare him out of taking off, or maybe the cat will make him s@!t a bunch more...
Good luck, let us know how it turns out!

LOL ... sorry, some of the response posts in here are funny!
Just get a small cap of ammonia (cheap and easy to find) and put a cap full in a bucket, put it in the car, leave the windows open a bit, he'll leave real soon. They can't stand the smell of ammonia so if they think it's there to stay, they will pack up and leave. Best meathod mentioned on here yet ... IMHO!

haha man this thread is getting nuts, lol
well update, this morning there was nothing in my traps and no **** marks like there was last morning, i left some scrap paper lying around too and nothing was disturbed.
so either the damn thing left when i pounded the subs or vacumed the hell out of the car, or got scared when I put my cat in the car *(haha i did do this btw, but my cat got scared and hid in on the rear deck...)
or it died and I gotta search a bit deeper for it
one other possibility is if it some how got into my trunk and crawled through the ports in my sub box.... and now its to deaf to hear anything i do to scare it.... guess ill take the subs out and look

Wow..... This Is hilarious and pretty scary at the same time because you don't know what damage Is being done. I am sure he might of took a chunk of the wires and some other stuff there. I would blow him out with a smoke bomb. J/K I would just look under the seats and the door pockets and behind the dash and you never know what you will find and look into the trunk and the subs. Try looking into the spare tire area hopfully he will be hiding there.
**** man, I don't know what to tell you, other than that sucks and good luck. You've probably tried this but I figure I will mention it anyway, turn the heat or AC on full incase hes in your vent system somewhere. I once saw a mouse run right into an intake grate in my house, those buggers are all fur and no bones, they can squeeze through anything.
i thought squirrels storeing nuts in the engien bay of my van was bad. those things would be falling out for miles, every day.
least with allthis work, u know how to take ur car aprt and clean it out really good, thats as half full as i can make this glass.

yea, well im just trying to remember perfectly what a saw when I saw the thing dart through the cabin. I swear I remember seeing a white stripe and it sort of hopped rather than ran like a mouse does.
Because I figure atleast with a chipmunk it wont be able to make home as easy as a mouse might in a car.
However if it is a mouse it could get just about anywhere in the car.
I called up the vet and exterminator today and they gave me a bunch of tips very similar to what im getting here on the org but all for mice. They were pretty stumped when it came to a chipmunk.
haha, well another alternative was offered to me today is to just sell the thing before any damage occours, or smell....

got_max i hope u find that damn thing, but this thread should be sticky'd
i say find some carrots, drill the inside of the carrot out and put a puch full of orange paint in there, so when the little ****** comes to nibble the **** pops and the **** has a yellow face

Hahaha, I always though these rodents were color blind, but still a clever idea. plus I dont know anything about rodents so I could be wrong.
Well in all fairness to the orgers ive set up jsut about all trap suggestion for tonight.
-carrots with orange paint
-Bar of soap
-some small basic traps,
-peanut butter
-ammonia
-coolant (apparently it smells sweet to them but very poisonous)
unfortunatly I dont have a gun, but I got my pellet gun handy
also i put an alvin and the chipmunks DVD on the seat, thought i'd give it a try
we'll see waht happens tonight

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE **************
Haha, well im really excited and relieved. I went down to grab something from my car and looked quickly at the traps and what do you know.
This sketchy trap that my brother in law told me about actually worked and there was a dead mouse in the bucket (it;ll make sense with the pic below)
I thought mayby it was just a mouse that was in the garage before but weve never had a single mouse in the garage or in the area i live in pretty much. So I guess it was a mouse all along, it would make sense since a chipmunk is much bigger.
Anyways to the trap, I guess I may as well share it.
Its a simple idea where you smear peanut butter on the outside of a pop can and stick a clothes hanger through it, you suspend it over a bucket and make a ramp on to the bucket. the mouse runs along the hanger and goes on the pop can but the can spins and the mouse falls in the bucket.
I would have preffered not to actually kill the mouse but since I thought it was a chipmunk i put alot of water in the bucket, (about half full) since chipmunks can, it woul'dve easily gotten out of the bucket.
sorry about the size of the pic. (I dumped the bucket out so as to not show the dead mouse in the bucket. kind of a sad sight

moral to the stoy I guess...
keep your door and windows closed, especially when camping,
and if your gonna get drunk enough to possibly leave a door open all night. just dont even bother opening the door in the first place. hahaha
or dont take a lowered maxima camping anyways, they dont do to good on a pot hole filled gravel road.
thanks guys for the humor support of this ridiculous event
