new tires
firestones and sp5000
for the money I would go with the firestone sh30's. They are really good tire for the money. When I bought mine they were 86 each and buy 3 and get one free.
they are quiet, good grip dry and went. But do watch out for one thing though--I had a horrible time with their balance--three times and the steering wheel still have a shimmy...and I took it to another place and I believe they did a much better job.
Check out tirerack. And the sp5000 are always highly praised here--but unfortunately, I don't first had expereince with them.
But many here with those tires can tell you they are excellent.

Check out the Kuhmo 712 too
I've had them on my car for several months and pretty happy with them... I imagine it should be great for rain cuz of the huge center groove, but it hasn't rained all that hard hear yet. Price is cheap for what you get... They are also available at Tirerack... if they have it in stock.... they sell out fast.
re: new tires
I've heard that the Dunlp SP 8000's are awesome for traction, grip, and price. Tirerack sells 225/50/16 for something like $87 each. I am definitely getting these tires when my stock Toyo's hit 20K. There are two issues with these tires though,
1) they're summer tires, so if you live up north, they will suck in the snow (I live in Austin, so it's not an issue
2) they have like 180 treadwear, so they prolly whould only last 15-30K miles (which for me is like getting new rubber every 18 months). There's always a sacrifice no matter what you buy, money or performance, which one is more valuable to you?
Good Luck,
Justin

If Firestone made condoms we would really have a popuplation
Problem. Spend 100 a tire and go for 225/50 SP 5000 -great looks and performance. Likewise the SP8000 are still around and are excellent.-price is good too. -though not good for any light snow.
RULE#1 don't buy tires based soley on price. Make a little investment.
If you avereage out the cost vs. the gas you'll use in a 30,000 to 40,000+ mileage period - you'll spend more on gas.
Can't go wrong with these Dunlops - Kick the stock tires in the ***.
