Are you sure it's just the needle? Listen carefully to your engine as it does that.
Any perceived vibration?

I had an infinity g20 that would do this. Sometimes it would work fine, sometimes it would go crazy (my girlfriend at the time described it as a wigi board) and sometimes it didn't work at all. Apparently this was a common problem with these cars and it was the tach itself so i bought a new (used) instrument cluster off of ebay and swapped it out. I owned the car for about another year and a half with no more problems.

Just to clarify my needle would shoot from 0 rpm all the way to the other side (9000 RPM) and back like crazy.

I would snag that cluster from scubasteve or you could try pmohr's suggestion but for $25 i would snag the cluster before it's gone. I am sure you could always sell it later if pmohr's suggestion took care of the problem

I believe it would but dont take my word for it. I bet the dealership could tell you or you could check at courtesy nissan to see if the part numbers are the same...

my tach does that occassionally. at times it goes nuts and wiggles everywhere, or it doesnt move at all, or it flings itself all the way up to max rpms then back again. and no the engine doesnt rev up or shut off when this happens just the needle being retarded hahaha
