Brake upgrade ?

My stock brakes are all but worn out, so I was looking to upgrade. The only thing is that I use a set of stock 16's for winter. The other seasons I have a set of front 350z 18x8 rims. I still have good tread left on the winter set. I was wondering if there was a set-up that I can use to keep the 16's for winter?

are you saying that you want to upgrade to a BBK (big-brake-kit) or just looking to replace your oem. I assume that you want newa calipers in addition to the new pads and rotors?

Not many options if you want to keep using your stock 16s for winter. Upgrade pads, fluid and lines, keep the stock calipers and replace rotors if needed.

go for the j30 upgrade. dual piston calipers and it will still fit your 16's.

But what about the rotors?
don't you still have to shave the 3mm off the diameter? that is a pain to do every time you need rotors (which shouldn't be all that often I would hope).

Someone should do some research and find out if there are any rotors thick enough for J30 calipers, yet short enough for clearance, that would fit on a Maxima hub...

Eh, probably not. We can dream.

yea i've been looking into it. bbk would be nice if they fit stock rims. i don't think u can pull it off. cuz i wanna upgrade and wanted to keep the stock rims for winter. but it ain't gona happen. oh well, pick out a smallest set of rims u can fit on there after the bbk, and put a set of good all seasons on them.

Would be much better to get 17s for winter. ie.. stock 98 ford cobra wheels clear, oem 17" 350z wheels clear and G35 COUPE 17s should clear.

Thanks for the reply's. I need brakes now, but don't want to shell out for rims aswell do to the good winter tread I still have on the 16's. But once those are shot I wanted to go big rotor and get some cheap 17's that clear for winter. So I am kinda stuck either spending for full brake upgrade and rims w/winter tread, or sticking with stock replacement brakes. Just didn't want to put money into stock replacement when I could put it towards the upgrade. Thanks again guys.

Are you looking for more braking performance, or the look of a big brake kit? Define "upgrade" in this case.

If you actually care about performance, I strongly recommend you look at replace/rebuild the master cylinder and brake lines, a fresh set of rotors (nothing fancy), complete brake bleed, and a set of true performance brake pads.

Putting on a big brake kit when upgrading stock sized brakes will work is actually a loss of performance, not a gain. They're unsprung weight with no benefit in performance. A BBK is only an upgrade when no configuration of the stock sized brakes can get the job done.

first brake "upgrade" is shocks/struts and tires. if either of those isn't performing top notch then the best brakes in the world won't help you.

Yes you do have to cut 3mm off, but like you said how often are you replacing rotors? maybe every 75-100k if you get good quality ones, not the cheap china crap.
