230 miles to a FULL TANK? normal?
230 miles to a FULL TANK? normal?
i have a 96 maixma with 18inch 06 maxima rims 245/45/18 and 2 12 inch subs with an amp im averaging 230 miles on a tank at most is this normal i have all maintainence done and only use 93 octane gas. i live in nyc, cleaned throttle body iacv, new spar plugs, air and fuel filter is there anything im missing- one crazy thing upto half way mark i can get 140-150 miles but thereafter i only get like 70miles from half way to end wat the hell? can anyone help? thanks
Damn 230 on a full tank? That can't be. I just changed my plugs and got a Warpspeed Y-Pipe, HAI, I gotta change my oil/oil filter A.S.A.P, and I still get +300 on a full tank. I don't know what's up with your ride.
last week coming from Connecticut i had a full tank and than drove around back home work, shopping and got 311 to the tank its amazing on the highway but when i c 230 full tank i bug out and GOD BLESS theres nothing wrong with engine, tranny no driveability problems either
another thing is that your wheels are ridiculously heavy - i think something like 26 lbs (if they are the ones im thinking about)
you take that weight, plus the subs, plus the sit-n-go traffic, plus the ever-increasing ethanol and BOOM, your gas mileage sucks.

i get about 270 to 3/4 tank in the city but about 380 to 3/4 on the interstate. I've got a heavy foot at almost all chances for a launch and a lot of full throttle rolling launches.
PLUS i have 19's and about 200 lbs of stereo equipment.

yeah i know when i put on my stock 15 in honeycomb wheels on i weighed the 06 max se rims it came out to 26 pounds each rims with tire inflated but i wish i could some way get better gas
I'm pushing 370mi and I still have over 1/8 tank, I can't wait to fill up and do the math, this is about 60-70% city. Granted I live in the hilliest city in Ohio and can coast most of the way home..
My input, keep your foot off it (I know it's difficult). If you have a manual, coast in gear as much as possible and shift before 3000rpm. Try fuel system cleaner, it might free up 1 or 2 mpg if it's really dirty. Also check out changing o2 sensors and knock sensor. I had two 12s in my last car, and I didn't notice that big of a difference when I took them out. Last but not least, try getting gas from a couple different stations, BP one week, Sunoco the next, et cetera.. sometimes the cheapest place ends up costing you more cause you have to keep filling up with crappy gas.
As far as the fuel gauge goes, I notice with mine that when it's full, the needle doesn't move for like 100mi or so, then it drops pretty quickly to halfway, slows down a little, drops pretty quickly to under 1/4 tank, then takes forever before I get a low fuel light. I think it's mostly how the 1/4 and 3/4 marks are set up though.

I filled up two days ago and had 396 miles on the tank and it took just over 15 gallons to fill. 240 of that was highway, and the rest around town. Straight in town I usually get at least 350 miles per tank, which is somewhere around 22mpg I believe. Just try to time the lights, coast as much as possible, I usually shift around 2200, and keep it in 5th as much as possible. It's no Prius but it's good enough for me!
Keeping your air filter and spark plugs helps alot in mpg. Also if you have a heavy foot that would cause lower mpg. My maxima has intake ypipe test pipe and a full exhaust and i also have 18's, my little trick is i dont pass 2000 or 2500 rpm's and i get about 300 to 330 a tank.

I get at least 450 mi/tank every time.
drop that sidewall ratio to a 40. On 18s, 45 series are for 5th gens and up. I know i can run the tank almost down to E and get around 320+ but i dont. i fill up once i pass the last tick mark on the gauge (~12-13 gallons). average mileage is around 250-280. thats half highway and half city.
Dude Im livin in NY and Im gettin the same ****. 230MPG TOPS CITY + HWY!! 275 tops HWY!! replaced the spark plugs, front knock sensor, and I had an o2 sensor which some idiot welded onto the Cat (WTF!) so Im replacing my whole exhaust. rusty muffler. leaking exhaust manifold(loud-as-****). bad flexpipe.
I didnt know **** about cars till I bought this one when I was broke.
Good luck fixin that issue. Lemmi know how high u get after.

All stock I drove from the bay to LA couple weeks ago and got like 460 miles to the tank with the cruise set at 75mph. But on average i get about 360-400 miles per tank driving aggressive 50/50 city/highway. Now that I got the 18s on though i can't really say, i need to drive it more.
I agree, check the knock sensor.

yea check the ghost code knock sensor. Also heat soaked city driving with 18s and 100 pounds in trunk doesn't help. Great gas just dropped to 2.96 a gallon here! I'm at 230miles now and a little below the halfway mark.
REPOST:
gas mileage numbers are not comparable unless the exact same driving is being done.
driver a gets 27 mpg out of his
driver b gets 13 mpg out of his
cars are identical, same mileage, same year, same maintenance done.
why the difference?
driver A lives 30 miles from work by expressway and works the night shift. He consistently averages 65 mph from home to work and back.
Driver B lives 3 miles from work along surface streets with stop signs every 4 blocks and works regular hours . He averages 10 mph from home to work and back.

i'll typically get anywhere from 330 to 350 out of a tank.
for you guys getting in the 200s per tank, where you all located, generally? in the north?, northeast?
yes, you're driving styles can have a notable impact on mileage but your regional fuel formulation can hurt or help too.

I live in Nashville, TN. I get about 280 to 3/4 tank. Alot of starting and stopping because of very short, 3-5 mile trips to Wal-Mart, etc. Everything is close so not much highway driving. Am I doing OK??

In addition to the traffic, It's gotta be something about the NYC gas
. I also get like 200 per tank, all maintenance has been done on this car, it's in great shape. IIRC, there were other posters on this board who get around the same. Thought it was just me but I'm glad others feel my pain @ least
. Think I read somewhere that the 10% ethanol that's added can negatively impact mileage?
I'm not a chemistry expert by any means

Dam dude...I get 200 for half a tank. I haven't tried a full tank yet b/c my car is fairly new. its a 1998 maxima GLE with 2-12s in it. Try switching gas stations..I know once i switched from using that **** at QT and went to Chevron my gas mileage has increased and I dont even use 93..go figure. Guess I got lucky with mine.
i wish my someone in my family owned a gas station maybe i could have got free gas lol, but i know one thing bad gas mileage or good maxima are the only car i plan on owning
Im in NY but on the island but still there isnt any real hwy driving around. I think weight has alot to do with it the max isnt a feather weight to begin with and when you add weight like subs tools exc... the mpg goes down tremendously. Ive posted this before but I get like 230-250 a tank with tools and stuff in the trunk but with and empty trunk I get well over 300 every time, wether I punch it from every light or go easy. I wonder if you removed some stock stuff (a/c, p/s, lightweight wheels exc..) if the mpg would go up as fast?
Driving or maintenance is what is to blame here. subs or no subs with my 17s on, with tires they weighed a little over 43lbs a piece, this is coming from the stock feather wieght BBS which were 35lbs with tires on them. I could still get well over 300 miles a tank, i did notice a slight decrease but not much. i think its time for a tune up for u, and make sure ur O2 sensors are not fouled
What about a possible bad FPR ??? I am having simmilar issues, but worse. I drive ~10 miles to work and it is taking me 1/8 a tank of gas. Yes, some stop lights, but few really. I took my GPS with me today and my average speed to work was (part hwy) 43.2 mph and home (same way) was 46.9 mph.
I understand that city driving is much harder / worse for fule consumption, but I have noticed a huge change in the past few weeks in my car. This also may explain my hard start issues (long cranks after sitting, and trying to restart after a quick run into the store (3-5 min) it wants to try and backfire. I guess I need to do a bleed down test on my fuel system to verify this ... but I'm certain it's my FPR.
