What the heck is this sound? How do i fix it? (Video Inside)
Hey so I just had a 11 hour roadtrip on the max from the Bay Area to Portland, Or. I am basically 20 seconds from my arrival point when i hear this weird BBR...sound.... I thiink...its coming from the tensioner, or belts?. What could be loose? what could be bad? how do i fix it.....!!!
It makes the sound even louder when I rev the vehicle....kind of sounds like when you put a baseball card against a bike wheel.....that brr brr brr noise.. lol
heres a vid sorry for the quality but try to make it out.....

Check the tensioner
Check the Alty
Check the A/C compressor
Check the power steering pump
One of those devices has failed. Should be easy to figure it out cause it's toast.

soo this is what happening as well...forgot to mention it....my a/c just completely turned off for like 20 minutes during the drive....then turned back on and it wouldn't give heat at 84(blow cold), would only give it at 85. How would one "check power steering pump or a/c compressor?" and if my alternator went out my car wouldn't start...right? so that couldn't be it...

Bearings.
Take the belts off and turn each device by hand. With noise like that, you'll know which one is bad once you spin it.
We would only be guessing at which component has failed. You need to troubleshoot.

so lets say im kinda mechanically inclined....but i can figure it out if you tell me where to look....if i took the belts off....i have a bad feeling i wouldnt be able to get it back on! lol...u guys dont think its just something loose?
how do i troubleshoot those devices....(a/c comp, ps pump, and alt)

my dad taught me a trick when i was younger...and its never failed.
First go get a broom handle. a wooden handle of any sort with do the trick should be around 3-4 feet long. start the car. and start placing the handle on the engine down by the tensior ****** be careful not to slip. just gently place it. and put your ear to the other end of the dowel/handle. You will be able to till the difference of vibration/noise, depending on where the dowel is. I would start first on the engine block so you can get a feel of what it should sound like, then start with the tensioner, then with the alternator and so forth. I had that same noise with my alternator, found the issue in 3 mins. just be careful you dont stick the handle anywhere dangerous while the motor is running.

who has a broom layen around...
either way you get the point..the job gets done..russianmax can come back to the bay area, and we can go have a bay area max meet and have fun!
its gonna have to be changed. you can do it from the top with a wrench, socket and a couple extensions in about 10 min. just make sure you loosen the nut on the pulley before you loosen the tensioner.
so i took my wheel off....and looking at the pulley.....it looks cracked!!!! but everythign is tight as it should be... i think i have my stock one somewere in california!!!! AHH =[ what to do? Can i drive the car with a cracked pulley for a while? jeez...talk about bad luck 4 me..=[

i also just rearended some one last night.. i now need carbon fiber..
I got a pulley from Kragen for cheap. I kept it in my trunk... drove on the squeel for 2 weeks till it gave out on me on the fwy, 400 miles from home. I swapped in the new one plus belts in a parkinglot.
yeap. im 650 miles from home. well this is my new home so im home. but my oem pulley is far away. This kinda sucks. Plus the weather here doesnt even give u a chance to work on the car...buckets full of rain...Only thing im scared of is that i wont be able to change out the pulley myself....dono if i have enough tools. =/ i talked to some fam to try to ship it out to me. but that makes my car undrivable....for a while. Any1 know if its playing with fire if I drive on the cracked pulley for a lil?
Make sure thats what the problem is first before you start throwing parts at it. I dont think ive ever seen a cracked UDP, ive seen stock pulleys seperate from where the rubber dampening ring is. Id suggest taking the car in and having someone look at it. Be very careful with the screw driver or broom handle, last thing you need is a screw driver getting flung out the car lol.
If you do end up doing it yourself, make sure you put the key thats on the crank shaft aside and dont lose it, because if you do, good luck finding another one, or explaining to some parts kid at autozone what it is.
Its not overly hard, but for someone whos not very mechanically inclined, it may be a little overwhelming at first.

Well if it is, Toss that thing, and put the stock pulley back in. IMO i swore by the UDP, untill i put my stocker back on and realized there was like no difference. Also when you understand engines more, you'll understand why they have the rubber ring to dampen vibrations..
If you wanna throw money at something, go buy a lightweight flywheel, something that'll actually make a difference.

is it hard to put the pulley in ? i had my mechanic do mine....now hes not around and i figured out how to get to it...how hard could it be? you have an aftermarket one layin around? or a stock one...cuz im having a stock one shipped 2 me 2mrw.
