A/C not working

My A/C has quit working so I had a mechanic at my friends shop - he works for a Dodge dealership- check it out. They told me the compressor is not pumping and needs to be replaced. He said they will take care of the labor for $350 but I need to by the parts.

I want to find out if anyone has replaced their compressor and dryer and then brough the car to someone to recharge the system. I read through the haynes manual and it seems simple enough to replace these parts but I'm not sure if I'm getting in above my head. Any ideas? Is there anything special the manual doesn't mention?

They did check the refrigerant charge level, electrical to the compressor clutch, and the sensors that may inhibit compressor operation, right?

I will have to find out exactly what all they checked.

I forgot to mention earlier that right before the AC stopped blowing cold I noticed some quick puffs of white smoke coming out from the right front of the car when I stopped at a light. By the time I made it to my destination the AC was warm and I could hear a gurgling sound inside the car. I kept the car running and looked under the hood and I could hear a leaking sound, similar to air escaping from a tire, coming from around the compressor area. Got any ideas for me?

it may be pretty tough to replace, if you have little experience working on cars but consider yourself a handyman dont try it..
