99 Rear brake/axle question

Are the rear wheels supposed to be able to turn independently? I thought the car had a solid rear axle so I figured the wheels would only turn together. My e-brake is not engaging on the passenger side rear, but I can still turn the wheel by hand even though the driver side rear is locked up. It just seems weird to me that it works like that. Can anyone confirm that this is normal operation? Thanks

If both wheels were linked to eachother as you believe, it wouldn't be very conducive to turns, hmm?

No, they rotate independantly. There's absolutely no point in a live rear axle with both wheels locked to eachother (especially in a FWD car).

Did you actually look at how the beam connects to the rear hubs? It's completely below center, meaning it can't be a live axle connected to both wheels.

Perhaps he shouldn't be working on his own car.
