Matching AT control unit

I may decide to replace my AT control unit, if I can find one cheap enough. I've got a 96, California spec. How close do I have to come? Same year? Calif. vs. rest of the planet?

Courtesy shows them as 95-96, 97, 98, and 99. FWIW the connectors all look the same except for the '99.

California vs Fed Spec dont't matter at all, that's purely ECU related programming.
