Strange starting problem
Strange starting problem
Just replaced my engine in my 95 max with a vq30de from a 96 max; running into a strange problem. Runs great, I mean FANTASTIC; 25mpg and the whole nine yards. BUUUUT, when I go to crank it up each time it turns, turns, turns, sputters, dies, then starts. Not exactly sure what we fubar'd, but I'd love it if you guys could give a suggestion. Much harder to start in the cold than the heat coincidentally.

I am lost here, i havent been on here for some time. I am having a problem with my starter so i took it out and went to advance auto and bought a new reman one. I installed it and when i turned the key it just whirs. the gear is not jumping out to catch the flywheel. When i disconnect the signal wire from it, nothing happens and when i reconnect it, it whirs, so i dont believe the problem could be in the signal wire plug. When i take the starter out and hook it up to a battery and jump the solenoid the gear just turns it does not extend to the end of the starter then either. Think i just got a bad starter or may there be something more that i am doing wrong or overlooking that could be causing this?

When you bring it back and get a new one, have them test that one before you leave the store.
continued starter problems
Ok, this is getting weirder by the moment. I took the starter back out today and took it back to advance auto and they tested it and it was working properly there. We ordered in another one for me to switch it with just in case. I brought it back home and hooked it up to the car but left it out of the hole a bit and i can now see that when hooked up to the car, the starter gear is extending all the way out and working properly. I put it back in again and tested it by using a jumper directly to the battery from the signal wire plug. you can hear the gear extending all the way out inside there and it spinning but it is just not grabbing the flywheel. We inspected the flywheel teeth and even turned the flywheel a bit to another location but the teeth look good as new in there. I am really hoping that when the new starter arrives this afternoon it is discovered that this starter is the wrong one/faulty or i am going to really be SOL!
starting problem
Well, finally solved the problem with yet another starter. I just put it in and it worked right off the bat. I guess these remans really are junk. You would think that paying over $130 for something it might work.
