Auto vs Manual HP?

** Please hold back the flames as I'm sure its being asked before but I can't find it **

What is the HP difference to the ground between STOCK 4Gen-Auto vs 4Gen-5Speed?

ie Is there significant power loss with an automatic compared with manual?

to me it feels the lost is in the hydraulic system which causes drag and in the TC not being a direct 1:1 coupling initially

yeah - I saw the generation comparisons but not auto/man.. and there were a couple (1 or so ) stock-ish ones but then not comparable ones with diff trans

10-15whp sounds reasosnable figure to me

just know that a manual has less parasetic loss than the auto, it doesnt have more hp.

At the engine, no. A 5MT A32 will consistently put down more WHP than an otherwise identical 4AT vehicle.

He specifically asked the difference AT THE WHEELS, not the BHP.

I'm interested to see the answer to this if anyone can find it.

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder if anyone can read on these forums. He asked a perfectly valid question that I have wondered about myself.

Stock 5speeds seem to dyno about 160-165whp consistently. Stock Autos about 150-155.

End thread.

I've also been told that five speeds will put down more than a comparable six speed simply because of less moving parts. Any truth to this?

yes, my point was that the engine does not have more hp than an automatic, just that an automatic has a bigger loss than a manual

No 5 spd Maxima is going to put down more HP than a 6 spd maxima (3.0 vs 3.5 engine).

However, if we're simply comparing transmissions, i.e. same engine mated with a 5spd vs a 6 spd, then in theory this assumption would be correct, however, the difference would be so small that other factors would greatly overwhelm it, and the gearing advantage of a 6 spd would make up for any efficiency loss.

Don't quote me on this, I don't have any research to back it up, just driving experience. I don't believe there is a significant difference between the two.

The manual should feel as if it is putting out more power, simply because the driver is able to reach higher rpm's which makes the engine work harder.

You can reach the same exact RPMs in the automatic as you can in the manual.

Yes, you can reach the same rpm's, but you cannot maintain the higher rpm's in an automatic, unless I'm mistaken. Also, automatics will not allow you to down shift to reach higher rpms in a lower gear.

Yes, automatics will downshift as far as possible when WOT, and you can maintain the RPMs as long as you'd like, if you change the position of the shifter.

Yes, turning OD off, or moving it down to the manual 2nd or low position.
