1999 maxima knock sensor change

I have searched and searched over 10 pages and looked at the FAQs so please do not blast me on that...

i see where the knock sensor is but I have a 99 cali spec and there is a valve type apparatus in the space to access the knock sensor.

how do i go about getting to the knock sensor with that in the way...it is even hard to get a socket in there to take the valve that's in the way out...any help surely appreciated!

Well, you could always do it the correct way, removing the UIM and LIM.

Or:

For the price I would have it done at a local shop. It isn't that expensive and they do it the right way. The problem is that even in a stock situation you must be a contortionist to get the sensor back in. I built a contraption out of a rugged coat hanger that allowed me to remove the sensor and then align it back up when I put it back in. It still took 2 hours, patience, more patience, and about a pound of flesh/blood.

Isn't that expensive? You're looking at a few hours of labor to remove the UIM/LIM, plus the cost of the part if they don't use customer supplied parts.

If you're doing it the incorrect way, you can have the KS done in under 20 minutes. If the correct way (and you've done it before) maybe 45 minutes to an hour.

i tried to also get to the Knock sensor today, but i tried to get the swirl valve out and really did have the right tools to get to the nut and was about to take off the manifold and then just gave up...between this and the egr valve this car is about to get a baseball bat beating.

Took me about 30 min. to replace the KS on my 99 cali spec.
Take the airbox and maf out to give you room to work.
Remove the two nuts that hold the swish valve actuator and move it aside.
Now you have room to work and can easliy see the KS.
Use an extension with a swivel, get on the KS nut, unbolt it pull the old KS out.
Use some tape to hold the bolt onto the socket while you reinstall it.
