Are the Pearl White paint jobs on 99 GXE a 3 step paint process?

I just talked to my autobody shop who just did repairs on my car after the accident. He told me my pearl white paint was a 3 step process: primer, color coat, & pearl coat (clear coat???). Isnt this how its suppose to be for all paint jobs? He said my pearl white tends to cost more then a normal paint job. Does this make sense to anyone? Im not a autobody expert. Only mechanics wise.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Jeff.

I just wanted to make sure they knew what they were doing.

Actually it's the same process as for normal bas coat/clear colors.

Primer step on, next is color, in your case white, then clear - your PEARL color is added to the clear paint. So actually the process is basically the same as for any base coat, clear coat process. Only difference is the added pearl to the clear top coat.

From what I know.

It's primer coat + base color coat + pearl coat + clear coat.

It's a pain because they don't know if the paint matches until they are all done.

maybe they have developed some type of new process to consolidate steps but I would think if you add pearl to the clear, it will dull as as the clear wears or as it's polished. :dunno:

When parts on my pearl white got painted it took them over a day to match my paint. They used three different colors to match it. Our color does cost more to paint.

It might be more expensive, but it sure looks good! Mine doesn't show the dust or scratches nearly as much as others. Only problem I've had is trying to get touch-up paint for the stone chips. See if your bodyshop will hook you up with some for future use. Nothing I've found in stores matches worth a damn, even if the codes match up.

Pearl white is a three stage paint process, but I can tell you this there is no body shop that can match pearl white 100% unless there painting over the whole car. The reason why is because they have to use the same amount of pearl which nissan used to paint the car which is very hard to tell how much pearl they used, but if you go to a good body shop the closest they'll get is maybe 90-95% which nobody can tell the difference.

While we're talking about pearl white (IMO, best color other than super black), how do you all touch up any paint chips?

I can only find the solid white, no luck getting the pearl clearcoat

It probably won't match up, but it's probably better than just the base color right?

I got my car back. They painted half the front end. The color i a bit off. They spent 30 hours labor on body work and 14.2hours on painting the front end.
