Coasting Problem

Lately on my 1997 Infiniti I30 whenever im just coasting, no brake, no gas, no turning, i can hear this creaking noise coming from the right wheel, and i can also hear a thumping kind of noise. Everyone i have talked to says its my CV boots/axles. How can i find out and is there anything i could do to fix it without taking it to a shop?

Is this on flat road, bumpy, what?

Have you jacked it up and checked out the suspension yet?

as far as my experience the dealer usually charges a base diagnostic fee which varies from dealer to dealer.

usually a cv joint will make a popping noise when you turn the opposite direction of the noise so in your case if you took a sharp left turn you should hear some popping. Since your symptoms are while you are under no load going straight i am going to go ahead and say its more thank likely not your cv joint.

In any case its not too hard to look in the wheel well area to see if the cv boot is ripped or anything else looks out of place.

If you aren't really car savvy i would use the forum to find someone in your area and then ask them if they could help you. For a free lunch i bet just about anyone on the org would be willing to help you solve your problem

It does it on flat roads and i have jacked it up but i only know so much. Thanks Feldman, if i look in and see that nothing looks ripped or out of place, is there anything else i should be looking for that could be the possible culprit?

if i had to guess i would say its a bushing, strut mount or something along those lines. I had an infiniti with a squeaky upper control arm bushing but it only squeaked when i hit a bump.

Moving in a straight line coasting on a flat, smooth road is the condition that would be the least likely to show symptoms of a problem as far as i can think. are you sure it isnt happening other times and you just cant hear it because you are under load and the engine is drowning it out?

Im pretty sure i found out what it is. My rotors are warped slightly and they are waivering back and forth in the brake caliper which is making the noise. I just got my rotors remachined and the noise seems to have gone away.
