Re: Rims and Tires For Winter
I would switch back if you have them if only for the simple fact that people that live in the areas that put chemicals on the road for ice would have to deal with damage to your rims and the possibility of sliding around into immoveable objects such as curbs and the like that can dent those expensive upgrades.
Here in Houston, not an issue.

depends...
I personally won't do the swap, because 1... i have no $ for winter tires
2, because if I want to use my stockers with stock tires I will crash faster then I will on the new All season performance tires I'm getting... Besides, in NYC, it doesn't really snow a lot in the winter, we've had a few big fall outs but when they are really bad, I rather not drive at all, because you might have good control of your car because of nice tires, but others won't.... most people don't bother with winter tires, if you don't hit something, or someone, someone will hit you.
BTW, If your rims are 15-16" and you have good all season tires on them, they should hold up well enough for an average winter, if you drive carefully like you should regardless if they are winter tires or not. But most, if not all 17"+ tires are not suitable for snow driving, plus in the winter when there is snow, like maximaman said, people put salt and other stuff on the roads which will screw your rims up, if you have chrome, you better wash them right away, so the finish doesn't peel off. The salt will eat through your clear coat too. I rather not risk it, but I'm not driving on rims that nice to begin with and they are 16's so screw it.

Re: The best thing to do >>
I've been looking for a set of Pirelli Winter Ice Asimmetrico snow/ice tires and it seems that the only size that the Tirerack has is 215/65-15. The price is right at $75/ea. They're about 1/2 half inch taller than the standard size of 205/65-15.... So no big deal right?
Well I placed an order for a set of Pirelli Winter Ice Asimmetrico and within 5 minutes, Tirerack called back saying that they have received calls with the 215/65/-15 tires rubbing on Maxima's.
Wondering what everyone else thinks about using 215/65-15's on the Max.
Thanks,
Scott

I take my 17's off and run the stock 16" 5 spokes with a good all season tire. Dunlop Sport A2's. Don't want the salt getting all over my nice rims. And Z tires should not be driven in the winter. The rubber compond and tread isn't any good in cold climate.
i throw my stock steels on for the winter for numerouse reasons. 15 inch tires are a lot cheaper than 17s, gotta save the nice finish on the good wheels and on my last car i bent 2 of the wheels in the snow and ice hittin curbs
