stubborn outer CV joint

"The outer CV joint is simply pulled from the CV shaft. I used a slide hammer to pull on the CV, with the CV shaft in a vice. It pops off fairly easy this way."
--motorvate.ca

That's a hilarious statement. I have a slide hammer and a bench mounted vise and I am getting nowhere fast. I also tried a piece of wood and a large hammer, also with less than optimal results. I understand how the joint is clipped to the shaft, but it just will not come off for me. I am about ready to just buy new shafts, which I really do not want to do. Any advice from people who have removed the outer joint would be helpful. Thanks.

Carefull where you put your thumbs and hit it harder. I did this to both side recently and had no trouble WITHOUT a vice. Diff pin for punch and 2 pound shop hammer.

I love it, the "get a bigger hammer" solution. That's all it needed, was a bit more "love". I was surprised to see how large the retention rings were on the axle compared to the new one I got with the boot. I actually had to remove the inner retention ring and tighten it up a bit before the inboard side would slide into the tranny.

The ring that came with mine was much too small, so I reused mine.
