You might as well flush it now, but the transmission filter DOES NOT have to be changed. Check to make sure all the 'lines' are intact on the defroster, if it isn't then you can buy a repair kit at most automotive parts store.

fuse for defroster

If your defroster worked fine then suddenly didn't, you might want to check the appropriate fuse.

You can do this easily yourself. Under the drivers sideof the car is the transmission. Near the back is a drain bolt(14mm I think), then when loosened allways you to drain the fluid out. A total of about 4-5 qts will come out(measure how much does). Put the drain plug back in. et a funnel and take out the 'transmission dipstick' on the top of the engine. Put the funnel in there and put the same amount of tranny fluid in that you took out. The total cost should be about 10 bucks...

Re: fuse for defroster

I checked the fuse inside the car and it looks alright. DO i need to check any other fuse located inside the hood. i saw a relay inside the hood and don't know whether i should check that.

You should go ahead and have the transmission fluid flushed, which will replace all of the fluid. Merely draining a few quarts out won't do a lot of good.

some questions

If one were to do the drain and fill method 4 times on a 4th gen as Bill did on his 94, approximately how much of the original fluid would be left? I did a rough calculation of ~13% if the fluid drained is 4 qt and the capacity is 10 qt but I'm not sure if these values are about right. Can the factory Nissan Matic D ATF be mixed with Dexron III? TIA.

The 100% change-out is the way to go, since our transmissions are fairly fragile anyway. You need it only once every couple of years, so might as well spend a few dollars more to do it right.
